Thanks all for your concern and advice about why I am considering the switch from Canon to Nikon. Although I did say that I do mainly shoot portraits and for that my 5D and canon system works great. The part where it falls short is when I use it for personal shooting of my 2 year old son. The autofocus system just cannot keep up as well as I think the D700 could. I also really miss the built in pop up flash that is non-existant on the 5D or 5D2, not for portrait work, but comes in handy shooting with the kids. I just think the speed of the D700 and the low light capabilities will meet all my needs.

I think on FF the 105 F2 has a focal length, that for portraitrs is easier to work with than the 85 F1.4. I've heard of issues with front/back focus on the 105 F2, which is what would hold me back. I'd test this lens for either of these issues. Sure some say you can adjust the ammount of DC to compensate for the front/back focus issue (if present), but you shouldn't have to do that. Then theres the fact that the D700's af fine tine might not be able to fix to the problem 100%. I'm speaking purely on what I've read on forums.

The pop up flash is more useful as a commander when shooting off camera strobes, you'll need to have a "short" lens mounted to avoid shadows in the lower part of the frame.

I'd also read up on the 105/135DC on some of the Nikon based forum as there are issues. Some say it may be a lack of understanding of how DC works but there's a long thread on Nikon Cafe form a pro portrait shooter about 105DC going back and forth to Nikon with a Canon like response that the lens is within specs.

Not tying to put you off it's your money but I've figured out the people I work with don't care what I shoot with they care only about the file. I'm still turning that damm wheel to change my aperture the wrong way after five months...

Here's my 2c. If you don't mind MF, 105mm f/2.5 P-C ($150ish) It's made for portraits.
The older 28-70mm f/2.8 is just about as good as the 24-70 (not just according to me), just different, and is now a lot cheaper and you lose 4mm at the wide end. I have it and it's a bit big and unwieldy but I love what it does. Hope that helps..

how does my lens lineup look for portraiture?

The lenses you mention are great. Unless you want a different focal length, these are excellent portrait lenses.
