From a few years back in Provence.
Appreciate your critique.

The framing kills it for me

I don't think there's enough contrast in the subject to be able to carry such a heavy frame.

There's also a weird soft patch at the promotory with the flag pole.

The colour feels off too.

Oh dear, i'm coming across very negative here. I suspect with a little less frame, a boost in contrast and a tweak in the colours you could transform this shot.

I'm not sure about the soft spot though. Do you know what might have caused that?

Worried (again) that I might be being a little harsh.

No apologies, Silver.
Appreciate your detailed observations, comments and suggestions.
Its interesting and educational to post an old image. I like to think my compositional and processing skills have since improved. But its helpful to revisit some old work and learn what could be done better.
As far as the soft spot; I see it. I think I lasso-ed some areas for selective sharpening in PS when I processed this about 4 years ago. Must have missed a spot.

Other thoughts?
Anyone want to re-work it?

Thx
Scott

I kind of like the framing, except for the fringy stuff on the bottom. If it were all "rock", it would be like looking out on a foreign world from the safety of a cave/coocoon. I do agree with Silva, a little boost in contrast would make it very nice indeed!

Hi Scott,

I'll have a run at it - should I copy the image or can you mail me the original?

regards,

Bob

Looks good, Paul. And I like the BW.

Bob,
Computer problems. I cant access the backed up larger jpeg and RAW currently. Want to play with the version here?

I am with Silver on the issue of
the heavy frame in frame. I also
feel that the colors aren't attractive.
It may have been a good candidate
for shooting using a combo of warm
filters.

Nice capture, Scott... would love to be there

I like the idea of the frame but wouldn't try to bring out the stonework, it will be muddy at best.

Why not make it a feature - black it out and add a title and use the image as a start to a slide show about the Provence?

Like this maybe?

Best, Bee

If I took the time to struggle with PS, I'd try a lightning bolt.

Bee,
I think the naming and blacking out the "frame" helps. Thx.

Bob,
Thanks for posting.
Not sure the soft/blur look works for me.

if it were shot with the sun lower, raking across the face of the buildings and cliff, would have been great. right place, wrong time, just happens sometimes.

So often true. Especially doing the tourist thing.
Thanks for commenting.
