p.1 #1 · What size Lastolite Hilite

I'm considering purchasing one of these to do some on-location portraits. What size do people find most convenient? I'm thinking about either the 5x7 or the 6x7.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

I've been using a 6X7 and it has worked out well. I always seem to want more space so I don't think I would be as happy with the 5X7. As an example, I can shoot a small group easier with the box on it's 7' side and still have 6' height to work with. The 6X7 is still manageable in size for transport. I think anything bigger could be a bit much. In the studio, mine stays up most of the time. I use it as much as a big reflector, a cutter and even as a quick black or white unlighted background. From time to time, I've used it as a poor man's overhead light bank. It's lightweight, stable and easy to position. It slides around very easily. It's really is a versatile lighting tool.

Good luck.

Thanks, Carmen. That's very helpful. One question, can you get even coverage in the 6x7 with just one light?

Depends how much of the surface you need to use. Even with two lights you don't get "perfectly" even coverage over the entire surface, but it still does a great job. I often get by with just one light because I don't always use the entire surface. But two lights will definitely help to even coverage and keep level's where spill can be more easily controlled.

Good luck

Thanks for the info. I discovered my local camera store has one, so I'll have to go check it out.

I'd say 6x7 all the way. That's what I own and I really enjoy it. If you go 5x7, I'm sure it'll haunt you in the end!
