Looks like mine is going to Jamesburg, NJ rather than VA.....I hope they do as well with the camera.

Yes, they do..

Two of my Mark IIIs were fixed there for the latest service .. also others reported that they do as well in prior posts..

Good luck !

Lide,

What is your opinion of the repair?

I called Canon and they told me it should have gone to VA, but NJ can fix it as well. He said NJ may just forward it to VA. Maybe if' its lost I would be out of my misery.

Ray, many thanks for your observations.

Simon, that's pretty encouraging - I'm in the same "do I or don't I?" bind too, and I'm getting closer...

Think I will see what feedback gets posted over the weekend but already really know what I should do, I think the MK..... whatever it may be will be out of my price range and the MK III would cover and exceed all of my needs if AI servo is fully functioning.

It seems likely that the next 1 series will have the same AF anyway if Canon are still invetsing in the MK III

Hi, Richard,

The first Mark III I sent to NJ for other issue just one day before Canon announced the AF Adjustment fix. called them twice, and they told me they can do the repair as well, and the camera came back as good as I could expected compared with all the 1D bodies I have used..

The second Mark III, I sent it to NN, VA first for the new fix, but I was not happy with the outer AF point which is the top most one when shooting landscape position, so I called NJ again, and they told me sent it in and they will take care of it, of course they emailed me a over night Fedex label right away, camera came back two days later, they fixed it, all outer AF points were dead on with my lens including the f/1.2 @ 1.2...

I didn't shoot AI servo a lot, but for some quick test shots, all I can say , yes, finally I can totally trust this camera since I bought the first one in June, 2007

Hope this help..

Lide

Lovin' it so far. Took some inside shots at f/2 of my boys running around the house, and the AF Servo hit every single one of them spot on.

Busy day today and the weather outside sucks so I don't be able to do a better test until Soccer this weekend or one night next week.

"Trust" is the word.....for all the stunning images I have taken, I never felt I could trust the camera. I have put the MKIII in some very poor situations and it performed flawlessly, then for no reason what so ever, it would miss a serious of shots a G5 could make. As much as I loved it, I was always concerned using it and always took more images than I needed.

I was hoping for a quick turn-around, like others here have reported. About an hour ago, I call the Jamesburg facility, and was told mine is on hold, as they had to order the mirror box parts. Apparently the load of cameras outpaced the inventory.
Does this sound like BS to anyone else??
BTW, all I got was a shipping label for Jamesburg, though the phone call went to VA
I'm hoping to get the 'trust' factor for the first time with this thing!!

Sounds plausible, mine just got back from Jamesburg on Monday and the repair sheet indicated the mirror box had been replaced (along with other things).

I'm very happy so far with this "fix", I had really good results using ROF during some fast and loose testing shooting my dog.

I need to do some more shooting to be totally assured, but it really looks promising.

I got mine back wednesday, I finally had a chance to shoot a Baseball game with it. I never had any issues with my camera that made me not like it. But I can tell you this. It has never performed this well. Center point, outer point and any point in between. The only OoF or even slightly soft photos are ones I know I did, def. User error. I have bursts of infield play that every photo is dead nuts sharp. I have 16 assignments in the next 12 days to really put it through a test. I'll post some photos later tonight.

1Ds III. I did a micro-adjusts yesterday for my 24-70 and 70-200 IS. For what it's worth, the center point AF was dead on.

Same story with my 400/5.6 and 500/4 on my 1D Mark III - they were off by about 5 clicks before the adjustments. I checked all my outer points and believe them to all be in spec as well.

Mine was actually sent off prior to the announcment but still went through the new calibration process. So interestingly mine was calibrated and then used with firmware 1.2.3. I did think it was better at this point, however when 1.2.5 came out I thought it made it even better. Yes I know there was not ment to be anything in the firmware to improve focus etc.

However agreeing with what has already been said by others about how the camera now performs, the other thing that I have noticed is my high ISO picture appear better than before.

After testing and adjusting a couple of days with test-charts and 'real live' situations, here are my conclusions.

It is a night and day difference before and after the last adjustment by Canon in a positive way.
The centre focus point is always spot on in ai-servo and one shot. The same conclusion on the outer points! But here is a huge difference using F4.0 lenses. It's obvious that this camera is made for F 2.8 and bigger apertures. That's were the benefit of the cross sensors appears. The outer AF-points are only cross-sensors using F2.8 or lenses with bigger apertures. With F 4.0 lenses you need much more contrast to focus spot on with the outer AF-points. That's something to keep in mind testing your mk III. But anyway, this is only the case in very difficult situations in low light.

I'm amazed by the results!

When the sun appears over here, I hope I can show you some results of birds in flight soon.

Kind regards,

Bas

I send in my 2 mk3 2 weeks ago. in 3 day's I recieved them back.
after the fix: working about 2 weeks, 1 1D [ the oldest 50xxxx] had about 4x a 99 error.
before the fix I never had 1 error 99 on my 2 body's. [ may 2007]

the newer one [53xxx] its spot on better as before.

Well I got my 1DIII back on Friday and tested this morning under very difficult backlit high contrast lighting conditions (where mine performed very poorly in the past) and it perfomed splendidly. I tested mostly the extreme outer focus points in Servo and consistently it focused well on fast moving subjects at close distance all at around F2. While I haven't tested enough yet, this is very encouraging!
