Reading this thread with much interest. I have the 'darkside' offerings and am asked which is better almost daily.
My pat response is "too close to call but the 300 doesn't do f2 very well" On FF these lenses are obscene, w/wo TC's.
Are these great times to be shootin' ....or what
Yeah but to counter, the 200 doesn't do 300 very well

It does 280mm f2.8 very well...
Actually I am quite impressed at the IQ at 400mm f4 with the 2x TC. I had to get it calibrated but once I did, VERY impressed with the IQ with the 2X TC.
It's like getting 3 lenses in one...OK, maybe I'm getting carried away here!

jagsiva, didn't you blow up the image taken with the 200 more so than the other one? So, that the eye would be approximately of the same size?
No, I actually moved in on the original image to get the same (close enough) framing. Both crops are 100% @640 pixels width.
BTW, it is insane how small an area of the total 21MP image is when you crop 640x600 pixels!

I bought the Canon 200mm F2.0 (even though it cost a lot more than the Nikkor) because it was Canon's, long awaited, latest/greatest and can state that (for my copies) the 200 seems to have better color and contrast than my 300mm F2.8-both wide open (even though the 300's MTF charts seem to edge out the 200).
The 200mm FL and F2.0 are much more useful, for me, for portraits. Also the 200's IS seems to work better and the focus is very, VERY fast (others have reported better than the 300 although the 300 is fast and certainly adequate). I use a Kirk handle and RRS foot for hand holding (and only take the handle off for the occasional tripod).
I put the handle close to center of balance and steady the rig with my, right, shooting hand. It's heavy but steady with the handle and superb IS. With the 200's fast focusing I can cradle or hold the rig then mount and shoot a burst very quickly with the beefy handle. I have worked this was all day with 100's of candids.

they look pretty similar and i wouldn't worry about performance from either one of them.
Ditto. Both are so sharp it just doesn't matter.
