teh 1D3 was 'beta' tested. That's what the canon explorer of light folks do. they also are the ones that create the images used in canon's campaigns.
I was in a PPA school class with Michele Celentano as the instructor when the 1D3 was new new, and was there when she called canon to tell them the camera got knocked over (on a tripod) at a wedding and was, well, broken. Canon seemed to take it well. At the time there were only 3 1D3's in the US.
Well they might want to get them to try and shoot stuff that tests the AF next time As it seems most of that beta testing was done by actual buyers (and probably still is).
+1 on the direct comp to the D300
Hell if it even had a mix of the 50D/5D2 AF system that would be a start. (ie 9 cross points with the extra points around center)

Ummm, FYI, they did. Rob Galbraith actually tested the AF and reported the AI Servo tracking problems to Canon. They probably thought whatever problems he was having could be resolved with a firmware fix. They were wrong. I can understand their situation somewhat. The early beta testers of products do find genuine issues but they also find a lot of stuff thats just user error. Sifting through whats a real problem and what isn't can be a challenge. Usually companies will rely several testers reporting the same issues to determine if its a real issue. In this case, its possible that only Rob G. reported the problems back to Canon and so his reported may not have been taken completely seriously.
This is all speculation my part of course. However my original point stands. The camera was sent to testers who actually used it in real world conditions, including sports photography.
Yes a sample of 20 hand built test bodies is one thing but then when you scale it up to production of 20 per minute the real surprises and fun can arrive.

The Northlight website, has rumours like this every month or week The 1D4 should have been released every month for the last 1˝ year according to their website. (IMO) that website is one of the most useless sites you can read
Perhaps I should increase the type size where on those particular pages where it says 'Rumours' - and the bit that warns to take whatever you read on the rumours pages with a -big- pinch of salt (I most certainly do :-)
There won’t be Mark IV till they completely resolve all the issues with Mark III…can you imagine brand new camera with perfectly working AF? This is just crying for class action lawsuit…..

I hope that none of those predicted stats are true. I don't want Full frame and I don't want 16 megapixels. I want 1.3 crop 12-14 megapixels and an AF system that works. I wlll be a happy camper.

Ho hum :-)
Hey Keith, love your site and always visit and not just for the rumors :-) Keep it up and just ignore these nay sayers....subjective opinion does not mean overall shared opinion!!
If Canon made a 16mp full frame 1D series cam with all the upgraded features of the 5D Mark II, I would buy it in a second. Perhaps it could have crop mode for those who enjoy the 1.3x, cropped to APS-H size it would still be over 10mp.

Whilst I agree that a 1DMkIV could come at any time, why not announce such an important new product at PMA?? If it's going to be the 25th, why not at least introduce a teaser now?
Although I'd love to be wrong, I'm not convinced.
Logical question.

Why would you want a smaller sensor?
Because the outer AF sensors are closer to the edges of the frame, thereby giving you larger percentage on the frame covered with AF.

It wouldn't surprise me. I bought one from B&H at $3725 on Feb. 1; now they're selling them for $3400. I think I see the writing on the wall...
No matter how much you hope for something, it doesn't necessarily happen. I accept that there may not be a Mk4 at PMA but I would have expected it sometime in the next 6 months. This could be a commercial disaster for Canon.
