Happy shooting,
Yakim.
I seriously doubt he'll update his ongoing report this time. Like many of us with problematic cameras he did get a lot of flack from the naysayers. I know it would certainly put a lid on my appetite to do all the testing again and write a report about it when most people claim you're just another idiot who can't handle a camera...
RG is not just a regular Canon user like you and me. He is well respected by all. This includes Canon, which chose him to be one of his beta-testers, and worked with him throughout this ordeal.
Well we started with the 1D. The there was the 1DMKII, swiftly followed by the 1DMKIIn, now that's three to my counting and then we've had the 1DMKIII, that's four, [4] is it not ... and it's proven to be almost the death of Canon in the high pressure sporting fields ...
For all the luck or lack of it, the next 1D will be the Fifth [5th] even if it's marked with a 4.
It will be a fantastic camera and especially as Canon will give me a preferential price, for my pain and suffering in the last two years ... OK then, it's a deal.

Since Canon has said that this recent service announcement is to fix outer AF point accuracy and says nothing about servo AF tracking improvements, I expect Galbraith will not do any testing and let his findings stand.

Didn't stop 'em releasing a 40D, 400D or 450D, did it?
No but in those cases the 4 is pronounced "yon" in which case it doesn't resemble the pronunciation of "death". Only when four is used alone, and pronounced "shi" does it sound like "death," however these days it is becoming more common to say "yon" for four alone, instead of "shi."

Well, you must have missed the snide remarks made here when he was publishing his results then. I guess some people simply don't want to hear a bad thing about a camera they bought. It was at that time when I and a bunch of others here just stopped reporting problems - we were all wrong was the 'communis opinio'. I can easily imagine RG acting the same way by stopping reporting.
I got my 1D MK3 back last week with the fix and firmware upgrade, and it's like a new camera. My lenses seem completely different in daylight now too! I was never happy with my 70-200/2.8IS, but now it's a dream with the MK3 and this fix.
Previously, daylight shots often looked like they had motion blur, even at 1/8000s speeds, but now they are sharp and contrasty, and I can track cars/bikes/people and servo works well on stationery objects.

Yes, I've seen some snide remarks but it was only to be expected. All I can say is that if Canon trust him, I am too.
Well when I came home today there was a huge Canon (parts) box waiting for me with my gear.
11 lenses 2 bodies, all adjusted at the expense of Canon.
Note that only the 1D3 and 24-70 were still under warranty.
Not only that, but besides calibrating my 5D, they've also cleaned it and gave it a functions check.
They took great care in packaging and all I can say at this point is kudos at Canon customer service (in particular CPS and the people from Digital Service Point).
Now I have to admit I am typing this BEFORE testing out my gear, but I just had to share my initial thoughts on this VIP treatment by Canon!
Although I have a lot of admiration for the general level of service being shown by Canon, there is no substitution for good luck and unfortunately my 24-70 was damaged in the transport.
There is a little dent in the zoomring that isn't only cosmetic, but has caused a deformation of the ring and subsequent tightening to unacceptable levels.
It is my latest lens (Jun '08 - so still under warranty) and generally a good copy.
On the one hand I want a replacement, as in like new for like new, but who's to say that a new is just as good as my copy...especially as they calibrated the whole lot.
Man, I am not willing to sent in my Mk 3 AGAIN, just for calibration.
Sorry for the nagging....but this is starting to drag on and on...
Well...won't waste more bandwidth until the epic is over (grumble).
Ruy
PS.
On a bright note, based on the still limited testing my 5D and 35/1.4 saw an improvement. I was never satisfied with that combination with wider aperatures at medium ranges, but now it is sharp!
I think you can call Canon and tell them about your 24-70.. I have a hunch they'll fix it for you.
Glad to hear good news about your Mark III.

Tough luck, Ruy, about that 24-70. Call 'm and see what they say about it. Seems like Canon is trying hard these days to satisfy their customers so all's not lost.
The 5D + 35L should be a wonderful combo - mine are but alas my 5D's electronics are starting to act up - but how about your re-calibrated 1D? I'm curious to know how they handled that.
Any update? i am about to send in all my lenses and All my Mark III's too. I might even send in my 5D with them all to get them calibrated. Most of my gear is just out of warranty but since the mark III's are recalled they said to send in any and all my lenses to test things with.
I know most people probably think this is a bad idea, but i would rather have them all tested and correct than to guess.

Oh, I am certain that Canon will do something about it, since they were responsible for the transport. I was guaranteed to be insured against such damage. It is just all the hassle that goes with it. I am convinced about Canon's sincerity in dealing with their customers. All in all they've shown very high levels of service.
Yesterday it was too late for more than a casual test with a lens-body combination or two. I can say that at least with static objects and one shot I already noticed an improvement with the troubled AF-point, but that was with the 85/1.2, OTOH, I saw more mixed results with the 24-70 before I discovered it was damaged. It is not impossible that whatever caused the damage did more than just knick the zoom ring. So the jury is very much out on the Mark 3 (the subject of this thread, sorry for going OT-ish). The real proof is AI servo and moving objects, so I'll run more tests the coming days. Testing all the gear at once feels more like work than I'd like it to be
As you well know today is Koninginnedag and my hands will be filled with our 19 month old boy, not a Mk3!
Has anyone had to send their MK3 to the CGI Service Engineers in Lake Success, NY? Mine has had a lot of issues and after 4 X to Canon Service and disks burned showing the lack of focus, I have now had to send it there (at their expense). Been there since Monday (today is Thursday) still no word on it.

A reminder that after sending my fairly new (to me) 1D Mark III for the outer AF adjustment and firmware update it came back hunting in one-shot mode in good light. Some AF points worse than others (especially the middle). Also the rubberized body cladding was starting to come off below the trash can button.
It is now back from its second repair (Irvine), Still hunts. In addition I had asked them to fix the body cover. They didn't.
