The 1D & 1Ds will now both be excellent cameras because of this fix. I'm half way tempted to get a 1DMkIII, if retailers decided to drop price, then send it to Canon for service correction.
I was considering Nikon, but they don't have the glass I want, and their prices are considerably higher.
There is no magic arrow, bullet or potion and it is regrettable that Canon needs to prepare a paper on how to use AI Servo with the MIII. This in itself demonstrates that Canon is having a real problem. Why should AI Servo be so differenent on one camera that it requires special instructions? I interpret this as meaning Canon is describing how to work around some known issue that they are unable or unwilling to fix. If they had intentionally changed how AI servo works, they would have had the paper ready when the camera hit the market.

Just curious why you would say that, did you say it after the first recall that was suppose to fix it then?

Thanks for the heads up! I'm going on vacation in a couple of weeks so this will be a nice opportunity to send mine in during some downtime and have it looked at and get the sensor cleaned.
I've never really noticed any problems before where I couldn't rule out operator error, so I'll be curious to see how things go when I get it back and see how it performs.
The first sentence of this announcement would be funny if not so sad...."We have learned that some EOS-1D Mark III and EOS-1Ds Mark III digital SLR cameras have a problem in the accuracy of the AF (autofocusing) feature"
I didn't notice any issues before but now since it was announced, I am sure, I will start seeing AF problems all the sudden . In that case, I will just use my D700....
Not being a 1D or 1Ds owner, but always wanting one, I did say that it would be a great body after the 1st fix. After that fix, there seemed to be considerably less AF problems, but a few people still had AF issues. This latest fix should correct that. I can understand some people don't trust Canon, but when I've dealt with Canon service in Irvine, CA, they've been very honest and forthcoming with me and I trust them. I contacted them soon after getting 5DMkII and asked about the creaky CF door & battery door. They said send it in and we'll fix it ASAP. I also asked them about the water/moisture issue as seen by the LL folks on the Antarctica expedition and they said that if I should have any issue like that, they would fix it.
I don't make any considerable money with my camera gear, only marginal compensation, and its not my livelihood, so I'm willing to consider the price vs. performance issue much more closely. Therefore, I'm willing to give Canon service a chance. I've talked to them and emailed them, and I've gotten stellar service.
eesh, just when you think the water is safe. FWIW I haven't noticed any AF issues with my MKIII and from what I can tell any misfocused image seems to be user error. Perhaps I'll test it out for a while before risking the dreaded 'calibration' trip.

I can't see a date anywhere. Please tell me you're pulling my leg and this is an old service note…
Happy shooting,
Yakim.
No I already scheduled mine - a newer yellow dot. Supposed to get UPS sticker in email in 48 hours. It is going to Newport News - like the sub-mirror fix.
Note that this fix is for issue when using an AF point other than the center that some cameras may experience
There is also a service notice for error 99 mirror problems.
