p.1 #1 · D200/D300 Update from D70s

Hi, nOOb here.....

I am trying to figure out if I need to go the whole way up to the D300 from my D70s at this point.

D200s are sooooooo cheap right now, and from what I can tell, one would be a pretty serious upgrade from my D70s.

I am mainly concerned about the ability to go really big, and having had some issues with image quality, I'm looking for informed opinions from users who would be familiar with the whys an wherefores of my particular update needs.

I have one image that has blown up nicely to 6'x11', but it seems to have been the exception. I've had really decent results with enlarging work from my D70s right up to 24x36, but the demands I'm getting now for work to be used is generally mural sized skylines, bridges, and the like.

Thoughts?

TIA,

Jeb

if you shoot fast moving subjects, get the d300, else get the d200. You didn't tell us in detail of what you really shoot or even why you want to upgrade besides more megapixels. how about a budget?

have you considered the d90? sounds like it might be the right camera for you unless you want the weather sealing.

D90, 50 1.8 & and some good stitching software should be all you need.

Your final selection will depend entirely on your needs. Between a 10 and a 12 megapixels camera you will not find big differences when it comes to enlargements.
I am a little puzzled by your statement of "having issues with image quality." The D70s with its 6 megapixels is a very capable camera but I would say that if large sizes are critical when enlarging the camera should be on a tripod fit with a competent lens.
I particularly like the colors of the D200 better than those of the D300 but that is me. Useless to say that if you will be shooting beyond ISO 400 you will be better served by the D300. You do not need fast AF for the type of subjects you photograph.
The D200 is a very capable camera and it will serve your purposes well. There is always the option of a medium format film camera and high resolution scans if those mural sizes are very important for your business.

go with the D90! it is more than enough. You don't need the 51point AF of the D300, but it sounds like you need 12mp.

I upgraded from the d70 to d200 when it came out and am happy. As was said, you only need the d300 for action or low light. If I was still photographing my daughters high school fencing competitions, I would have talked myself into the D300. Since that is done with, I see no need to upgrade.
