p.1 #1 · Swapping 17-35 for 17-55...will I regret it?

Well, I've been thinking, I've got a 17-35 on DX and since I am not going FX anytime soon, I'm thinking that I could probably make a straight swap for a 17-55, as that will be a slightly more useful range. And if/when I do go FX, I'll be looking for a 24-70 instead as that is the FOV I like using.

Is there anything that I will be missing if I replace the 17-35 with the 17-55? I think the 17-55 is a bit more flare-prone but I can live with that. According to photozone, sharpness is more or less the same, distortion is the same and the slightly higher vignetting is not an issue as I usually add a bit in post anyway! CA seems to be a bit higher but I never usually notice any with the 50/1.4 so anything else is better and fixing it is just a slider away in Lightroom.

Is there something else I'm missing?

If you need the range, why not. But the 17-35 will be awesome for that day that you *do* go FX

Well I'm thinking that when I *do* go FX I will be looking for a 24-70. I had a 17-35 when I was shooting film and the focal length just didn't work that well for me.

Sounds like a sound plan to me. I have the 17-55 and it is fantastic. The flare issue is over-blown and is easy to fix in post. Supposedly the thing ghosts badly, but I have yet to see it. My 50 f/1.8 ghosts far worst. I have not seen any vignetting with my 17-55 on DX.

It makes sense to equip yourself for the format you have. If you are sticking to DX for the forseable future, then by all means get the 17-55. If you go FX, you will likely want the 14-24 and 24-70 combo anyway.

Good luck with the choice.

i love my 17-55. i never owned the 17-35 so i can't compare them, but i do know that the 17-55 is really awesome. So your plan sounds cool. Especially if you don't plan on fx in the near future. I knew that i would get FX and still bought the 17-55, because i also knew that i will still use DX.

Go get it, you wont regret it

If you need the range then do it for sure. Myself, I don't shoot much between 35mm and 80mm, so I wouldn't really use it that much.

First post on here. Panos, I have a 17-55, mint with box and all bits that I would be interested in exchanging for a 17-35. I have gone FX and your lens would be better for me on the D3.

If interested PM me and we can talk.

Cheers, Michael
