Did Canon start manufacturing cameras at a decommissioned Ford/Chrysler/GM plant?

Daan,

Have you reported this to Canon’s local office? - If yes, what is their response?

I did report it... They say there seems to be a more than usual percentage (beyond the usual margin of error) of reported problems related to built quality, total shut down issues, missing parts, etc.

He hopes. It's not like Nikon have NEVER shipped a faulty camera...

I almost always buy in-person at a store so that I can inspect the gear and do a few basic tests to determine its condition before buying. I then take the gear home and test it under my typical shooting conditions to assess its performance. It sounds like you could have some yourself some trouble by inspecting it before you purchased. I once went through a dozen Tamron lenses at Samy's Camera before I found one that was acceptable -- and that's under minimal lighting in a dark camera store. That's how maladjusted some of those lenses were!

After 20 years of shooting, I've had my fair share of unacceptable gear. In that time, I've had problems with Mamiya, Hasselblad, Zeiss, Profoto, Speedo, Canon, Tamron, Contax and a few others. So it's not strictly a Canon issue. This stuff happens on occasion regardless of brand.

Mike , I never said Nikon were flawless but comparing the last few DSLR cameras from both , Canon comes way behind on build , reliability , and image quality.

Daan, sorry for your issues. Canon does seem to be on a bit of a slippery slope when it comes to quality control. Things do occasionally break in shipping but it would appear that this stuff should have never made it out of the factory. I also have Nikon gear and while they can also have their problems they look like their paying a bit more attention to quality. Making the switch is painful and expensive but if in your mind they are playing around with your livelihood the time may have come.

Daan, statistically speaking, what happened to you is so extreme as to border on the impossible. There are visibly hundreds of FM owners who have already purchased 5D MkII, and, if the reject rate were anywhere close to your terrifying 3 out of 3, the FM Website, Canon's, DPR's and a few others woud have been swamped long ago.
So my advice to you is this: you can get another 5D of the basis that lightning does not strike 4 times in the same place, or you can switch to Nikon. But angry ranting against Canon isn't doing you any good. If anything it increases and prolongs your pain. Move on, make your choice, go ahead with it, and be at peace. It is (only) equipement after all. Not worth your getting emotionally distressed. Many 5D MkIIs work just fine, including mine. You can also take fine shots with Nikon.
Namaste!

I think most would argue with the "way behind" on image quality. The other two... well, that would be harder to argue with given Canons QC problems.

It has to be said however that the happy (canon) campers still outnumber the unfortunates like Daan here.

I still have a 1Ds3 with Canon lenses that work properly and give great IQ. Considering the time and effort it took me to get things were they are (working properly - I had two 1Ds3 duds) I really don't want to give that up. The 5D2 was meant as a back-up / second cam beside my 1Ds3. A role previously performed by the original 5D. There are other options out there (one of them is Nikon)... but I don't look forward to using two systems at the same time. I will have to calm down before doing anything else. I appreciate the suggestions

I used to work in electronics retail and I can tell you this is nothing new from ANY company. Nikons always came back, Canons always came back, Sonys always came back (way more often then anyone else).

Seriously about 1 out of 7 cameras sold came back with genuine defects. Same goes for computers, and mp3 players, and tvs etc. Nothing knew at all. The OP just got really really unlucky.

He has the same luck with cameras that I have TVs, but I know its not QC at the TV company, crap happens and every single brand is like that. The only thing electronic that doesnt seem to have near as many returns is videogame systems.

This is true. I read review after review on my Samsung LCD monitor before buying it. There were all glowing.

I am now on my 3rd monitor.

Dang, did you get all of the cameras from the same vendor? I'd almost be more suspicious of them as getting three random, defective cameras in a row seems very unlikely, no matter who the manufacturer is.

I was wondering about that myself - who is the vendor so I know not to get a 5D2 from them if I should decide to actually get one in the first place.

Not after your experience.

Apparently the rejects get sent to the Netherlands.

Maybe the store got their copies from a knock-off factory in China. Just kidding! Wow, 3 bad experiences in a row. What are the chances of that happening? Maybe someone is trying to tell you that this is not the right camera for you!

Man, you've seriously got the worst possible luck, methinks.

Still, I don't think it's much more than bad luck; we're looking at severely anecdotal evidence here that says almost exactly nothing; says about as much as the fact that I've never had problems with any of my Canon gear to date, really. Yes, better QC would be nice. Yes, in an imaginary world expensive, highly sophisticated bits of electronics involve no risk, but since we live in this one, that's a pipe dream for pretty much any brand, any model.

But it still blows if you have to deal with it again and again (and again, in Daan's case). Commiserations, dude.

This is unacceptable and if Daan moves to Nikon, I would fully agree and support his decision. If you make a living with your gear, you can't put up with this sort of nonsense.

That said, how many 5DMkII units have been sold world wide, and how many have been returned to the dealer or to Canon for repair or replacement? How does that compare with the Nikon D700? It would be interesting to know, if we should ever find out, what the probabilities are.

I suspect they are quite comparable since the 5DMkII has been selling like hotcakes and is always sold-out or back ordered at many dealers.

I live in Switzerland. We don't have the same "liberal" return policy here as you have in the USA... As soon as it's out of the shop it's yours. Whatever happens has to be dealt with under warranty. And I don't even start with Canon customer service in Switzerland.... In fact it's not even Canon as they subcontract it to a company which is repairing lawn mowers and washing machines as well !!!!

Daan, I definitely understand how you are feeling. It would be nice if some Canon executive saw this thread and decided to use thier (Canon's) resources to find out why you received three bad kits in a row. They can replace your kit, but can they replace your lost time? Can they make up for all of the frustration and anxiety and grief accompanying the fiasco? I hope that you have communicated with Canon and not just the place you bought the kit from. Somebody at Canon needs to know how bad the QC has been.

As much as a loathe the concept of "liberal return policies", this is not an example of it. If a supplier delivers defective goods, they have to exchange it or provide a refund. It's not like something broke while it was in your possession, this is a case where a new product is DOA. I don't know about the laws in Switzerland, but sending a customer into a warranty battle with the manufacturer in such a situation is borderline criminal IMO. The supplier is responsible for delivering a properly functioning product and should be held responsible if they don't fulfil that obligation. Warranty is for issues that occur post-delivery.
