Daan,

Have you reported this to Canon’s local office? - If yes, what is their response?

I did report it... They say there seems to be a more than usual percentage (beyond the usual margin of error) of reported problems related to built quality, total shut down issues, missing parts, etc.

I wonder if Canon have a system of reporting, monitoring and corrective action-taking on their product defects. Given the mass produced consumer goods nature of the equipment, perhaps that would be too much to expect. Given the merchandise prices though, one would expect a fair degree of rigour there.
Like requesting their production staff to do an investigation of a defective article batch causes and remedies......on their own off-work time, naturally.

That's not solving the problem that's suggesting the solution...if you buy him one that's solving the problem...

Did Canon start manufacturing cameras at a decommissioned Ford/Chrysler/GM plant?

He hopes. It's not like Nikon have NEVER shipped a faulty camera...

I almost always buy in-person at a store so that I can inspect the gear and do a few basic tests to determine its condition before buying. I then take the gear home and test it under my typical shooting conditions to assess its performance. It sounds like you could have some yourself some trouble by inspecting it before you purchased. I once went through a dozen Tamron lenses at Samy's Camera before I found one that was acceptable -- and that's under minimal lighting in a dark camera store. That's how maladjusted some of those lenses were!

After 20 years of shooting, I've had my fair share of unacceptable gear. In that time, I've had problems with Mamiya, Hasselblad, Zeiss, Profoto, Speedo, Canon, Tamron, Contax and a few others. So it's not strictly a Canon issue. This stuff happens on occasion regardless of brand.

Mike , I never said Nikon were flawless but comparing the last few DSLR cameras from both , Canon comes way behind on build , reliability , and image quality.

Daan, sorry for your issues. Canon does seem to be on a bit of a slippery slope when it comes to quality control. Things do occasionally break in shipping but it would appear that this stuff should have never made it out of the factory. I also have Nikon gear and while they can also have their problems they look like their paying a bit more attention to quality. Making the switch is painful and expensive but if in your mind they are playing around with your livelihood the time may have come.

Daan, statistically speaking, what happened to you is so extreme as to border on the impossible. There are visibly hundreds of FM owners who have already purchased 5D MkII, and, if the reject rate were anywhere close to your terrifying 3 out of 3, the FM Website, Canon's, DPR's and a few others woud have been swamped long ago.
So my advice to you is this: you can get another 5D of the basis that lightning does not strike 4 times in the same place, or you can switch to Nikon. But angry ranting against Canon isn't doing you any good. If anything it increases and prolongs your pain. Move on, make your choice, go ahead with it, and be at peace. It is (only) equipement after all. Not worth your getting emotionally distressed. Many 5D MkIIs work just fine, including mine. You can also take fine shots with Nikon.
Namaste!

I think most would argue with the "way behind" on image quality. The other two... well, that would be harder to argue with given Canons QC problems.

It has to be said however that the happy (canon) campers still outnumber the unfortunates like Daan here.

I still have a 1Ds3 with Canon lenses that work properly and give great IQ. Considering the time and effort it took me to get things were they are (working properly - I had two 1Ds3 duds) I really don't want to give that up. The 5D2 was meant as a back-up / second cam beside my 1Ds3. A role previously performed by the original 5D. There are other options out there (one of them is Nikon)... but I don't look forward to using two systems at the same time. I will have to calm down before doing anything else. I appreciate the suggestions
