The first 5D2 kit I purchased contained a 5D2 with a broken LCD and a questionable 24-105L lens...

The second 5D2 kit I purchased contained a 24-105L lens with a stuck diapraghm blade...

The third 5D2 kit... well:

This 5D2 appearantly left the factory with a missing light shield plate

I did wonder where all the dust came from... Well, with a mirror banging against sharp metal objects...

I think I am done with Canon's 5D2 after three times trying... WTF are they doing in their factories

What a dissapointment

Don't be critical of the 5D. I said that it wasn't perfect on another thread and a whole lotta whingers started complaining about the internet and pixel peeping and God knows what. Just keep quiet and stop sharing your experience. We've got to stop this internet thing.

Daan - you are having some bad luck aren't you.

I am amazed at their quality control. OK, so they don't check every body that comes out of the factory but you would think that they would have a parts list and some kind of basic cross check. I mean, if you are building something from a box of parts and when you're finished, there are some parts left in the box then...

They need to get this sorted or more & more people will lose faith with them.

Pierre.

Well, photography is my living... It is vital that I can trust my gear and the company (Canon) that I buy it from.

The stress, disbelief and waiste of recources and time this little 5D2 adventure has cost me... This is too much. I HAVE LOST FAITH in Canon

My used 5D classic looked better than that when I took it out of the box...

Damn, talk about bad luck!

Man you've got terrible luck. Just curious, did you get these bodies all from the same vendor? I don't know what to suggest, try a different vendor perhaps?

Procreation seems to be more important to Canon than QC these days. Maybe waiting another 6 months may help

Wow, Canon workers have a short gestation period. Isn't it normally nine? Maybe they're in a rush to get reproduct to market.

Can't you use a 1Ds MK III if stuck with the Canon brand?

Dang, did you get all of the cameras from the same vendor? I'd almost be more suspicious of them as getting three random, defective cameras in a row seems very unlikely, no matter who the manufacturer is.

Perhaps you should run out now and buy a lottery ticket!

That sounds like a disheartening experience, especially for someone who has to depend on his gear in order to earn his living.
For sure a continuing bad publicity for Canon's arrogantly priced photography equipment.

I don't think the 5D2 is 'arrogantly priced', but it's pretty slapdash to be sending out cameras with important components missing.

Holy $h!t Daan, that sucks... I guess I'm lucky again, my first copy works as advertised right out of the box. And from my short experience with it I would suggest you keep trying, if in fact the camera is ideal for your shooting needs as mine is, at least on paper. It is a remarkable camera when working properly. Do you have a retailer where you could handle one before picking it up?

The first kit came from one vendor, the other two came from another vendor... Both reputable sellers here in the Netherlands. In all cases I received a total refund. But I wouldn't be suprised if all the kits came from one big shipment from Japan...

You can only have so much bad luck... IMO there is something seriously going wrong with Canon. A bad sign if you ask me.

I was just recouperating from my bad 1Ds3 experience... Two duds before I finally got one that worked as it should.

So... no, Canon doesn't get any more money from me. I am done with sponsering such amateurism.

I encountered a similar situation when purchasing the 40D through US1Photo when the the camera was first released.

This was still during that initial "craze" to acquire the camera and I was surprised to find it available. It was advertised as USA version and shipped very quickly, but camera 1 had the battery installed, ~600 actuations, lcd protector removed and left in the box, etc. Replacement camera had a defunct LCD and came in a kit lens box with no kit lens. I gave up after the second try.

Soon after, I purchased two more from B&H and Costco and they arrived 100% ok.

You may well have ordered from a reputable vendor all three times, but I envision that there is little stopping folks at some retailers from tinkering with the latest and greatest items before shipment. I can't imagine any electronics manufacturer would allow such things to leave an assembly line, but maybe they do?

Did you get the batch number? Might be useful to identify faulty batch.

Call me a noob, but what's a light shield plate? Anyone got a picture of what one looks like were it to exist on a 5D II?

I got my 5D2 about a week ago (from Kamera Express) and I haven't found anything wrong with it... yet...

I am pretty anal about changing lenses with the camera pointed down to minimize the chance of dust dwindling down onto the sensor, so I haven't actually taken a peek into the mirror box yet. I'll have a look see when I get home tonight and keep my fingers crossed until then...
