Chuck, CTO = color temperature orange gel and the 1/2 is half strength, they come in various fractions to full strength. I find the flash too cool even for daylight, so a 1/4 gel helps warm it up, 1/2 may be a hair too warm here, as you can see in #1, but I haven't gotten around to cutting up my sheet of 1/4 CTO yet.
Nice shots. Great job using the 580 in such strong sunlight. I have yet to order the gels for my 580's. Man, there's always something else to buy. It never ends eh?
I think the warm look of th #1 image is very nice (reminds me of color transparency) and a very nice change from seeing the "cool" (cold) flash look that is so typically seen in flash work.
If one is to go "not exactly natural" I would prefer to see the warmth as shown.
The warmth of her skin (and expression) really stand out from the surroundings.
I also like #2 because it shows that great expression again and the figure in action.
The shot of the two together? I think it would be more interesting to see this from the front.
