I thought this is quite a good example of how much detail you can pull from a 5D II file. Unfortunately I am not able to upload a bigger file to enable you to see the details better.
Gotta love it, Bobby. Mine is still blowing me away. The first few shots I did were under strobes, and MY LORD. I felt like a dermatologist at 300% crop.
in good light at ISO 100- it is amazing, simply amazing
finally some decent light last weekend for some winter landscapes/water and I'm very impressed with the results
(not so bad at 3200 indoors either)
Great shot ......Great camera.....but I`ll have to wait till next summer to get one. Also your very lucky to live in southern Cal......I used to have a girl friend there....Oh well......I guess I`ll have to wait even longer then next summer to live there............Peter

I am sure 5D II has great resolving power, but your example did nothing to show it.
I think the OP mentioned that he wasn't able to load the full res file...
Jayem1: You are quite right actually. I believe the 5D II and a good prime lens can yield far more detail, but this subject matter does not have as much intricate detail. Still I am able to see quite a bit more detail in the original though.
The Image: I reside in Long Beach but I am not a pro. I could have done a better job if it had been a better day. It was completely overcast and a little foggy actually. Will be much better after a rain storm.
Great shot, Bobby! I am glad that Canon didn't put an AF system that competes with that of 1D series body into the 5D MkII . I didn't want to feel what a lot Nikon D3 owners back then felt when Nikon came out with the D700, which is almost like a D3 in a more compact body and for significantly less.... Thank you, Canon!

9 cross type points + 6 invisible assist AF points should have done the trick
It would have made the 5D2 more versatile and it wouldn't have been a threat for the mkIII series AF

Here's a tighter crop of the original image. Again, this is not the best example, as this image does not contain very much fine detail unfortunately.
You must be joking right? There is a lot of fine detail in that crop. The 5D2 at its best... This would make a stunning BIG print

No, I am not joking. I have seen Diglloyd's resolution test between the D3X and D3 and the detail you get from the D3X (of a building with very intricate detail) is just amazing. The D3 is simply unable to resolve and show off all the little details in the image. The 5D II is not as good as the D3X but hey, for 1/3 the price with HD video and sensor cleaning .... I can't complain.

In what way is the D3x a better cam than the 5D2? Are you talking about IQ here or about (pro) features?
I think your sample shows an area of photography where the 5D2 shows its best performance: landscape photograpy. I doubt D3x landscape images will look significantly better than that of the 5D2... Just like there is no significant difference between the 1Ds3 and 5D2 when it comes this field of photography
Both, in terms of IQ and its pro features. Not significant in terms of IQ but still better, and noise suppression is certainly superior regardless of what MR thinks.

It doesn't? Seems to me it contains the sort of fine detail that would be a good test for ANY camera and lens combo. Unfortunately, I agree with others who do not think your photo is a "best example" of the resolving power of the 5D II. Since my Nikon D2x and Canon 1Ds II can resolve better than what you're showing here, I'm not sure why the resolution in your shot isn't fully representative. That said, it will still probably make an outstanding print of good size.
I've got to say I'm pretty impressed. When I saw the first image it was no big deal. Same goes for the second image. But when I saw the third crop, and realised you can almost (almost but not quite) read the number above the door at the top of the stairs, and then compare that back to the size of this number in the original image - well I think that's pretty impressive - hmm, what's my bank balance looking like!

If you see how much detail the tight crop holds (just look into the store for example) and what portion of the full frame this represents, I think this is pretty awesome. Now lets see what detail is there when this is shot with a D2x... I assure you, there will be a visible difference
