Most of my photography is BIF and action .I use the 40d and Canon 400 5.6 I would like to have better and more reliable autofocus . Would the mark 2 be a big upgrade . Cant swing Mark 3 right now so Im I think Ill be looking for Mark 2 . What about 1.6 crop versus 1.3 . Will that be a big issue ?

I am curious... in what way is the 40D's AF unreliable in AI Servo?

I think the general consencus is that the 1D2's AF is one of the best out there, even when compared to the mkIII series.

I know the Mk III's autofocus is light years beyond what my 20D would do. I imagine the Mk II's to be similar.

Focus sometimes just seems to wander off target for no reason then its tough to regain .

Here's an animated .gif I shot just for giggles yesterday. It's three short bursts in AI servo with the Mk III and the 70-200mm f2.8 IS.

Gizmo

Focus acquisition is almost faster than I can push the button. Here's a single frame from one of the series.

Aha, heard/read that before

About 1.3 vs 1.6... Yeah, you will loose some reach. But what is the extra reach good for when you can't get the bird in good focus?

Is that because the 40d does not have any assist points? Keeping a BIF bang on focus point is not easy.
Can you hire/borrow a mk2 to see if it does the job you want?

What type of lighting are you shooting in? I went from 20d to 40d and saw major improvements for BIF. I would think the move upwards into any of the 1- series bodies would be significantly better, especially when you're using a relatively slow (5.6) lens. Not knocking your setup...check my profile. Just saying that when it's nice & sunny out, my 40D & 400 5.6 is stellar for BIF...when it's darker or cloudy - not as great.

Philbin is right.

No contrast then the 5.6 lens can't perform.

I ended up getting a 135 mm f 2.0 and a 200 mm 2.8 for those situations (early morning and cloudy days) to get BIF.

Doesn't matter if you are using a 40 D or a 1 Ds MK II - same lousy results.
