First off, let me say I hav searched this cornucopia for info on this problem and have come up empty with the shutter bug. I have a 20D that has jumped off the deep end with an Error 99 message. I have had the message a few times before with this and a 10D when the lens contacts were dirty. This time, the shutter when the camera is turned on in either position fires and then fires around 1/2 to 1 second later over and over. Once every 10 to 12 seconds, the shutter fires like it is in high speed mode with a double burst. When the the lens is off, you can see the mirror release up and down. I have tried it with both a CF card in and out, with different batteries and with various lenses attached. It even fires a few times after I have dropped down the battery compartment access door. Once out of 100 times it has actually stopped when I did not have a CF card and showed on the rear display "no cf card" sign. Should I call in for an exorcism? I hate to send it to Canon to find out it is a $300+ shutter replacement. This sux. Any advice Fred experts out there have any other advice. Luckily this is my former backup for my backup, but still it grates at me. Any advice would be helpful on what to do, or what gauge shell to use in my Remington 870 Express.
Sounds like a shutter curtain issue - those give ERR99 too ( http://www.lensrentals.com/news/2008.12.31/canon-err99 ). Have you put it in 'clean sensor' mode to lock up the mirror and (theoretically) open the shutter? That will show you if the shutter is at least opening all the way or if its partially jammed.

Unfortunately, it will not stop clicking to let me in to active the clean sensor mode. I did notice that the curtain is not opening as the mirror is flipping up, so I bet you are right. thanks for the post. I was beginning to doubt anyone would respond. I will look closer at the shutter leaves and see if something is jamming it or if it will ever open. Can't hurt (hopefully). Thanks again for the post!
