p.1 #1 · Albums

hello all... I would like to get some input on wedding albums...
there is info in the "wedding resources and information stickey" on where to get them printed ..my question is ..how do i present the photos and design to the companies that make the albums... i have extensive experience with photoshop and lightroom.. none with albums.....
I would like your thoughts on Design programs ( I have indesign).
Do I even need to learn a design program?..if so ,do u have any suggestions on how to go about learning the program..are there templates for album production?

Thank you for your help

Most of the album suppliers handle it differently, so contacting them directly is the best move... but regarding your questions, this may help...

- Many album suppliers offer design services for an additional fee
- Most companies accept JPG or other standardized file types (meaning that many can and do use Photoshop)
- InDesign is meant for exactly this purpose and is easy to use and learn (plus there's tutorials online)
- Many companies sell templates that work with Photoshop, InDesign or many others (Google would help with these)

Hope that helps.

Most company also supply templates for their printers, usually a Photoshop .psd file or InDesign file.

The best way is...PHOTOSHOP!
Save PSD files and just send JPG files(250~300dpi).
I have designed over 350albums with sweeeety PHOTOSHOP.

junray707...in photoshop alone? you have to send them in as individual pages then ..right?

how to you make a double page spread that way? do u have to provide a story board..?
as u can see ..this album design is totally foreign to me..

Nope, no story board. Just files, usually named to what the printers want, in order.

page01-page-02-etc-etc.jpg

You upload all of the files, verify your order, etc...

Yeah..in Photoshop alone.
You have to just send JPG files but don't forget the page numbering(ex/ P01, P25).
If you want to see some of samples, let me know.

This year, I have to design almost 100 albums from 2 studios and a photographer.

Just say no to Quark! I had to use that as a newspaper photography editor and I wanted to throw the G5 out the window every day!

InDesign is a dedicated page layout program. Photoshop is not. What you do in Photoshop, InDesign (in the hands of an experienced operator) will do in 1/2 the time with 1/2 the hassle.

That said - I only do 6-8 albums a year and don't think I'll reap any real benefits from spending the time to learn ID so I'm sticking with PS

I design mine in PS. A lot of folks rave about Photojunction and I recently downloaded now that it's free, but haven't had time to play with it. InDesign is also popular (obviously from the responses here). There's a number of folks that like Fundy's album builder as well: http://www.fundysos.com/.
