I seem to remember seeing new 28-70L come with those soft gray pouches, LP something.
However, was the lens introduced at first with a hard leatherette clad case, LH something ?
If you need one I might have one. If I find it would you like to see a photo of it so you can be sure its what you are looking for?
P.S. I am assuming payment for the box will arrive in today's mail. I hope so since I have a mortgage payment due and I am short $100. If I do not make the payment my family (14 children) gets thrown out in the street
It was with hard case in the beginning just like other L lenses, then they all switched to pouches. The black ones got the grey soft pouch and the white ones got the off-white hard pouch. I purchased mine in 2002 just before the 24-70 came out and it had the soft pouch.

We have confirmed that the lens was introduced with the hard case. Subsequently, after Canon completed a wholesale switch from hard cases to pouches, it seems the lens had been shipped with the grey pouch until the end of its production life.
