p.1 #1 · 100-400 on tripod

What would you all do in a situation where the wind is howling and you are taking long exposures shots (20-30 sec) with a 100-400 - IS or no IS?

I know the 100-400 does not have tripod sensitive IS, but if the wind is blowing enough to see the lens moving in the viewfinder, do you think IS helps more than it hurts?

thanks

I've done a lot of them in a 25knt wind this summer ! 400mm, ND grad, no IS, but Gitzo serie 5 with markins and my bag at the bottom of the column. Exceptionnal sharpness on 1DsII, exposures between 20 and 30secs. Was even surprised myself !

When doing long exposures with a 100-400 and wind, I think the only satisfactory solution is to use a solid tripod, as KiboOst did. The 100-400 is a rather large lens when extended, and not so heavy so wind can really cause it to vibrate. I do no think IS helps much on anything that long.

I have never had much luck with the 100-400 on a tripod if the IS is on. The only exception is a Wemberly head that is NOT locked down IMHO.

I simply stand between the tripod and the wind. That cuts it down quite a bit.

You might also try taking the hood off the lens, if it's not too sunny out. That thing is an absolute wind sock!

A simple test will answer your question.
Take several shots with and without the IS and test the results

Don't forget to tell us which is better!

IMHO

It won't make much difference on that lens.
