Heading to the area for a long weekend and would appreciate some shooting suggestions in the area. We are not limited to Sedona and can travel up to 150 miles for day/night trips.
interested in anything historic/nature/Native American
Appreciated, thanks!
I recommend Schnebly Hill Vista but you'll need a 4WD if it's muddy and at least something with clearance if it's not. Sunrise and Sunset are both good. It's one street south of the "Y" and there is a good sign.
Schnebly Hill is great if it's open and you have a good vehicle. If not, go out Dry Creek Road to Boynton Canyon and look around in that area. Red Rock Crossing is the classic, but it will likely be leafless this time of year. I trust you've seen the threads on Oak Creek. There are ruins in Sedona that you can go to, but you will need to register and go when you are allowed. Up outside of Flagstaff is Walnut Canyon which has Sinagua ruins which is a nice day trip. A little further north of there is Wupatki with ruins. South is Montezuma Castle. I recommend looking up one of the photo books of northern Arizona and laying out your trip that way. A whole lot of choices in the 'nature/historic/Native American' are up there.
Red Rock Crossing from the west side for sunset. Turn down Upper Red Rock Loop Road and watch for signs to Crescent Moon Recreation Area. A number of very photogenic turn-outs as you descend the road.
Hard to pass up the short drive (2.25 hrs) for a sunset along Hermit's Rest Road at the Grand Canyon South Village. They only open this road for driving during the winter months; otherwise it's shuttle only. The canyons views are particularly wonderful with winter air quality. Go out the East Rim Road (State Hwy 64) and check all the vista points along the south rim. Stop at the Cameron Trading Post and see some of the really beautiful Navajo craftwork (rugs, jewelry, etc.)
Jerome for dinner one night at the Haunted Hamburger. Spend the afternoon checking out the ghost town and hundreds of antique cars and trucks at Gold King Mine just outside of Jerome.
This only scratches the surfaces. but it's a good start!!
Oh and the best restaurant in Sedona is Dahl & Dillucas.
I highly recommend Walnut Canyon, it is superb and yes I made it back up all those steps in a thunderstorm with lightning. I also highly recommend coming home by way of Jerome, take a lensbaby with you if you have one, unlimited photo opportunities there.
I'll second Walnut Canyon....and I like running up the steps.
Don't miss Sunset Crater and the lava fields, and just a little further up the road is Wupatki. All maybe an hour+ from Sedona and just outside Flagstaff.
Thanks again. Will definitely check out Slide rock park and bring the NDs. Also Schnebly road conditions. Wupatki sounds interesting also. You guys are great!
