p.1 #1 · Some Diving Pics

I had the chance to shoot my old high school team for the parents were interested in buying pictures. Just as I remembered, the lighting was horribly inconsistent along with the color. Any critique would be greatly appreciated. These were all shot with my D300 and 50 1.4 at f2, iso 1600 for all of them i believe.

Nice action here! Would have been better with some cleaner backgrounds and a tighter lens but they don't make 70-200 f/2s do they! Maybe fix the color cast? But nice job overall.

yeah, my friend was borrowing my 80-200 who shall remain nameless, wait, no, his name is Dann. at 2.8 it'd be at iso 3200 and still with blurry images. The was a yellowish light in the stands which is why the background is yellow though, I'm not sure how I should deal with any other color cast.

Tough job. Lots of junk, but the parents will look past it & that's what counts. The flourescent lights in the stands might have been the "soft" variety and they have a yellowish cast.

good treatment of subjects

I hate shooting diving. I've always found it's a neat sport in motion, but regular pools (unlike, say, the Watercube) are ugly arenas, with ugly light (everyone looks like a freaking ghost, and that's with the right white balance), and humid air, and busy backgrounds, and tile that makes it so freaking noisy, and...

Nice work dealing with what you're given. I hate diving.

It's been awhile since I've shot diving but you one suggestion is you might look for a different vantage point to shoot from. I see there are seats in the upper tier, perhaps you could shoot down with the pool as the backdrop. I see a flag on the wall which also makes a good background. Just an idea.

I have to agree with you Will, there are so many other sports I'd prefer to shoot

swimmerdad, i normally would move around more, but I was stuck with only my 50 and for a friend was borrowing my 80-200 2.8. Thanks though.
