I want to use a Canon 500D on a 70-200 f/4 lens. The 70-200 f/4 is a 67mm lens. Canon does not make a 500D at 67mm. I have the 77mm 500D. Can I use a 67mm to 77mm step-up ring? Will the distance from the 70-200 to the 500D as a result of using the step-up ring cause distortion, or simply increase the magnification?

You can use the step-up ring. I've used a 77mm 500D on the 100mm macro (58mm filter thread) before.

Do you think the bigger sized 500D's produce better images on smaller filter rings? You know, kind of like stopping it down?

for some reason, I can't get the focus working on 70-200 f/4L IS with the 500D on a67-77mm step up ring...
what am I doing wrong?

set the focal length(zoom) and focus manually.....you get exact focus by slightly moving yourself fore and aft. Others may elaborate more.....or in better detail

I use the 500D with step up ring on my 70-200 f/4. Follow Dave In La's suggestion. Manual focus is the ticket.

Step-up ring is perfect solution and I also use the same idea for polarizers.

No. I have tried it on similar mixes (Nikon/Canon) and it should not be a problem. You will probably want to shoot at f/8 or smaller on any case for DOF.

Unless you are looking for some soft focus artsy effects, you do need to stop the lens down a fair bit with the 500D to get really sharp shots.

Hood doesn't work with 500D anyway.
