I am very much into photography and I'm looking to upgrade my kit to full frame.
I currently have a 30D, 17-85mm (which doesn't work, some sort of problem with the aperture blades), 10-22mm, 70-200 f4 (not IS), 50mm 1.4 and Sigma 30mm 1.4 and 50-150mm 2.8. I also have a 350D as a backup that I hardly ever use and I've just bought a second hand EOS 3 which I won for a decent price on eBay. Oh yeah, and a 580 ex. I have had the Canon lenses since Sept 06 and the Sigma ones since March 08.
I care about photography a very much, I intend to do a 3 or 4 year degree in it in a couple of years. Currently, the main areas of photography I am interested in are portrait, fashion, beauty and glamour, both in the studio and on location. I shoot the fashion section of my university magazine. This consists of having my photos published on 3-6 A4 semi glossy pages a month. I also take photos for a club night on a monthly basis. From 2005-end of 2007 I was mostly interested in taking travel and landscape photos. From books I have read and photos that inspire me, the next area I would like to concentrate on is film, particularly black and white, but probably not until the end of the year.
I have been considering going full frame for 18 months. I almost did when I was in the US (I live in the UK) in the summer of 2007 (back in the good old days of $2 to £1 ). My main reasons for doing this are that I am very critical of my work. I want to be able to crop aggressively and make large prints (12x18 or occasionally larger). I enjoy my growing reputation amoungst those who know me as being of a "semi-professional" level and I endeavour to be as professional as I can with my work.
One of my two main questions with regards to full frame are whether to go with a second hand 5D, available for ~£900 on eBay with a view to getting a 5D mark II in a year or so when competition with the D700 and the A900 has caused the price to fall or to get a mark II now.
Also, the question of lenses arises. I know I won't be able to use most of my lenses. I had been considoring replacing them with fairly similar full frame ones. Possibly...
replacing the 10-22mm with the 17-40mm, the 17-85mm with the 24-105mm, keeping the 70-200mm (non IS) and the 50mm 1.4 and buying another prime.
Primes I was considoring were the 100mm 2.8 macro in particular and maybe the 35mm f2 or the 85mm f1.8 instead of the 100mm macro.
I know that I have been fairly long winded about this but I thought it would be better to explain my situation and some of my thoughts fully. Any comments of advice would be much appreciated.
