p.1 #1 · Lake Michigan from Chicago

It was pretty darn cold. I am relatively new to the game (and of course to this site). Any comments to help me improve are appreciated. So many amazing posts on this site I hope these live up to the boards standards.

p.1 #2 · Lake Michigan from Chicago

Great spot with some dramatic potential. Interesting ice and subjects. Keep on shooting.

2, 3, 1 are my preferences in order.

1 is nice but too busy without an obvious subject. The people compete with the scenary and the lines are too close.

2 has a nice use of the tree on the left for foreground interest, good horizon, and lots of nice space. It would be better with a bit more land in front of the tree and if the dock material was all there and not so busy on the right.

3 is tilted and has nice features but they don't flow. The horizon would be better with less sky.

I am not a great photographer so my tips for someone that is new (as you say above above) are to focus on basics of composition first as follows:
- keep the horizon at 2/3 or 1/3. 1/3 if your focus is on the sky and 2/3 if the subject is the ground (not 1)
- try to make the foreground lead to mid ground lead to background so the story fits together (your 2nd)
- try to keep the image less busy. Simpler is better usually (like the ice and a pole)
