Long time reader, first time poster. I'm a college student who hasn't really made much money off photography, but I've recently been pursuing it more seriously. I'm what I guess you might consider a "knowledgeable amateur".
Anyway, I took a few photos on Christmas day for my girlfriend's family (unplanned... they were dressed up for church and I happened to have the camera in the car, so we thought "why not?"), and would like feedback! I used what was available - the background for most of the shots is a white wall in their house.
these feel very cramped to me (perhaps they were)-crops are a bit tight for my liking (i.e., chopped off shoulders)-i'd also watch out for posing-for example, in shot 2, the girls in front are back to back and essentially facing out of the frame
still, the family looks good and i would imagine they were very pleased with these-glad you decided to post-hope this is helpful
Welcome! I think you did a nice job for an impromptu session. Many of the images look too tight, though. I don't know if this is because of limited space or not. Be careful when using a wide angle so close up on groups, and I don't think shooting up on people is always the most flattering angle.
I really like the first shot. It's very cute. The second shot you cut off the shoulders of the end people yet left a large space between the woman in the center and the two on the ends. There is also too much space above the head. Number 3, again there is uneven spacing between the heads and the lighting seems to be a bit uneven (the case in most of the shots). 4th shot too much headroom and the girl on the bottom is too far away. 5th shot, again heads are too far apart and too much going on in the background. I am not a pro by any means, but I hope that my mput helps you in your future. Keep shooting, you're off to a good start.
Great first session. Your subjects were reponsive to you shooting them. You can see there are some spacing issues keeping these from being spectacular, #2 is so close but the head spacing in the back row is off. Lighting in 1,2&3 is better than 3&4.
