Thought I'd shoot a men's basketball game with just the 70-200/2.8, but at the last minute decided to bring something wider than usual, the 50/1.4 (inspired by Scott's recent post). I put the 70-200 on my 1DMKIIN and the 50 on my 1DsMKIII. Here are 4 shots with the 50. I did miss a few shots with this combination that I thought I should have had, but I honestly can't say whether it was me or the lens. C&C welcome.
Oh, yeah, this is Utah vs Wyoming. Utah prevailed, 91-67.
Looks like you're white balance was around 3200K is that about right? I use the tungsten setting which gets me 2800 but I think I like them a touch warmer.
Really nice images, Russ, the action is great.
Looks like you had some serious referee interference going down today, nice job working around it to get your shots.
Russ, where are all the people! I understand the students are gone and all... and they are in a football frenzie, but still. Shots are nice, but I honestly I never have been very confident in the 50. Good on you for making it work.
Thanks Will. The ref's butt was active. If I could have set my white balance off of it I'd have been in business!
Phil: Thanks. I pull up the RAW file in Photoshop ACR and check out the white balance settings.
Hey Mark, thanks for your comments. Regarding the fans, just bad timing. Utah BB played Gonzaga on New Year's Eve and drew over 12,500. Then there's the Sugar Bowl hangover, and as you said, students are away from campus since classes don't start up again until the 12th. Also, this is a team that has had a lousy couple of years and is going to have to win back the crowds if they hope to have them on a regular basis. All that said, I agree that a full house makes for a much better backdrop. I hope to have that for the first gymnastics meet coming up next Friday.
Dann: Congratulations on your purchase! The MKIIN is a VERY solid performer, and remains my #1 go-to sports body. You're going to love it. Here are three shots with the combination you asked about:
They look sweet Russ. I just picked up a ds and plan to use in sports as you do. I can thank you for all your ds posts. Now I sleep in the garage but not alone .I take the ds with me.
Andy: As long as you're not alone.... You'll have to let me know what you think of the dsIII. It has yet to disappoint me, and I'm guessing it's capable of a whole lot more than I've ever asked from it. Tomorrow night I'm going to try some remote work with it and the live view should come in handy while setting that up. I know it pairs well with the 200/1.8. I see you have the 14L II. I'll bet that'll be sweet combination.

Where do you get all this money? Is Mizzou that inexpensive?
Ill be paying off mizzou til im 40 haha
but i work like 70 hours a week during the summer making about 18.50 (waiter during the day, bar back at night) and i work every single second that i am not studying and shooting
i work really hard for the things i have ... the only thing that my mom has paid for was the first XT i got when i was 16 haha
I bought that 14mm knowing I would have a FF some day. You can't believe the difference that lens has on FF verses a 1.3 sensor, OMG cant wait to start using it in the field. I'm gonna shoot the ds3 tomorrow at my daughters indoor soccer game. Its just pickup soccer until next months state cup games start, so its a place to knock out some ds3 files for practice. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm sure I will try a few lens combos, may be even throw in a off camera flash or two.
