p.1 #1 · new camera

I'm doing a lot of concertphotography lately and taken pictures in very low light.
At the moment i use a canon350d and want to upgrade.
Any idea which canoncamera will be best fot these low light circumstances?

The 1D Mark III would be ideal but as Paul points out it depends on your budget.

Then with the budget being sufficient it's the 1D Mk III. It's the best all around shooter in Canon's line up.

1Ds3, 135L, 200/2.0L, and if you can get close to the action then throw the 35L and 24L/II into the mix. The 85L doesn't hurt in general but it would not be my main choice for concerts. Some people love the 50L but I am no big fan of that lens.

This was taken in low light with a 1D3 & 85mm 1.2, ISO 3200. It looks way brighter than it actually was.

If I had your stated objective, I'd probably get a used 1DMkIII, something like a refurbished unit by Canon where I'd have both the return/refund option and a bit of a warranty. I wouldn't wanna pay more than $3k US for it though.

Upon receiving the camera, I'd also test the living daylight out of its AF system, under conditions that simulate the type of concert performance I've bought the camera for.

dutchoscar:

If you are not already fully aware of it, Stan's second post is the correct answer to the spirit of the question. He took you at your word and specified the best; if what he named is within your budget and you need sound technical advice, Stan has given it to you. Good luck.

if budget is no concern it's a toss up between the 1D mark III or the 1Ds mark III

the 1D3 shoots faster; the 1Ds3 shoots bigger...

btw, the best simulation of the type of concert performance is, in fact, the concert performance.

I think a 5D II would work fine, it has amazing low light performance at high ISO settings. I had a 1D III but the 5D II beats it in that department.

I owned the Mk III and now own the 1Ds Mk III and D3. If you don't need the extra fps of the Mk III the 1Ds Mk III is best if not then the D3. My two 5Ds wouldn't focus well with action and the buffer clogged before one Mk III did.

When you say you now have a 350D people assume you have some budget limitations.

I use the 1DsmkIII a lot for concert and theater photography. The 1DmkIII will give you about the same performance at half the prize and half the filesize. I recommend the 1DsmkIII if cropping headroom is what you need and you do raw processing for noise control. The 1DmkIII if you are good at in-camera composition and .jpg straight out of the camera is what you need. The workflow is faster and I find the 6400 ISO valuable for .jpg shots. But since you mentioned budget is no issue the 1DsmkIII is the top. Have EOSfun!
