p.1 #1 · 1Ds Mark 1

I was walking past a local (at least local to my parents place) London Camera Exchange the other day and noticed to my astonishment that they had a 1Ds box in the window. I couldnt really see much else as the camera wasn't visible. So today I popped in and asked them if I could have a look at it (having never held a 1D series camera before). I have to say I was quite surprised at how comfortable it was to hold. The viewfinder was very clear.(The camera was obviously used)

Unfortunately though the camera was a mark 1 ( was hoping it was a mark 2 at least). So when the chap started talking about specifications it came as a surprise.

They were asking £800 for it with the current exchange rate thats probably about US $1160.

Would you rate the 1Ds mark 1 over the 40D ?

Does anyone still use the mark 1 ? What are its specs ? Any input would be great

Easily worth more than a 40D. Prices from major dealers in US right now seem to be around $1300-1400 for clean ones.
There are ways that the original is slower to use than the MkII, LCD is small, etc.
IQ, however, is terrific. Build is as good as it gets. AF is much better than any of the 40D and similar cameras.

Specs: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1ds/

From everything I've read, it's supposed to be a superb camera. I currently shoot with a pair of 1D Mark II so I know the form factor.

Just for my own sake of collecting, I am looking to pick up the classic 1D and 1Ds bodies for personal projects. :-)

That's a steal. What a wonderful camera. Had it since it came out, until it was replaced.

Since when is 800 GBP $1160? What happened to the Pound?

I would take 5D over 1Ds at $1100. 5D has newer technology.

I echo what Me_XMan said. The IDs Mk I is a very good cameras however with the pile of lightly used 5D's around at the $1100-1300 range you would do well to go in that direction. Easy camera to walk around with and if you want the pro feel snap on a grip. You would be money ahead and much happier in the long run, my 2 cents worth.

So does the 40D. Still no match.
Simply saying that something has better technology doesn't make it sufficiently better. You need to define the problem domain, and then we see.

1Ds is a bargain for $1000-$1200. Granted the 5D may be available for about the same and true it has newer technology, but if image quality matters, the 1Ds still rules.

5D has better sensor than 1Ds. I'm going with quality on the sensor. 1Ds should be around $700-800 range IMO. Anyone bought at the price of 5D has paid too much.

Image/print quality at less than iso 400, give me the 1Ds every time. and i've had 3 5D's at various moments over the past couple years. you shoot with a 5D. you paint with a 1Ds.

Good camera but I've heard the battery life can be a bit crap. If the AF is the same as the Ds2, however, it'll still beat the pants off any current body

Battery life on the 1D is bad, 1Ds is fine.

Not on my 1Ds. Battery life ranged in the 250 shots in good weather to 25 shots in insanely cold weather (Antarctica). My 1Ds3 can get 3500 shots on a single battery - now that's battery life.

I get closer to 500 shots per charge with mine but I refresh the batteries often when I charge them.

mike-
would you mind expanding on your camparison a little? i understand that it is subjective, but you could you TRY to describe the difference you see in the files? since the prices have fallen, i've been considering the 5D or 1Ds as an opportunity to explore new areas of photography. thanks for any input.

I think I would rather pay 2,000 or so for one of the 1DsMK2s floating around on the Buy/Sell forum. Much better camera IMHO.

well, since i am completely ignorant, what makes the mk2 so much better that one would be willing to pay roughly double the cost?

THe 1Ds Mark 1 stops at ISO 1250. It's a problem if you need to shoot higher than that. But it's not if you don't.
