I was out at the Canon Service center in Ivine the other day to pick up a camera I had in for service. A couple of the Canon techs were out in the parking lot playing with a pre-production 100-800 f/4 L IS USM lens.
After several minutes of begging they let me snap off a few shots with it attached to my 1D2n. They have some shrubbery out at the edge of the parking lot that attracts a lot of burds. I got to say that this puppy is one dream of a lens. A little on the heavy side, and difficult to handhold, but this is the type of zoom lens that appeals to Mr. Zoom
Speaking of pictures, when I look at the image of the lens itself in the announcement, I see both "4" and "1:4.5-5.6" just above the red ring. What does 4.5-5.6 signify?

Wow what a lens Ken were you able to hand hold it ? Stunning colorful images are those CWW's for Ant mans viewing ?
Garen
Yep, handheld, Garen. You don't think I would be walking into the canon service center with a tripod do you? Yes, the WWs were definately posted to get Ant's attention

Thanks!
The nominclature on the pictured lens is a little misleading. They used a stock photo of the 100-400 for the the web posting as they didn't have a studio shot of the 100-800 ready in time for the announcment - would be my guess.

Why would you sign your post that you are a fibber?
Personally, I don't find starting rumors a joke.
If you want to be humorous, work at it and don't create stories that are useless.
Martin - I declared that I am fibber just so people like you don't get the impression that I am really starting a rumor - guess it didn't work. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please go and enjoy the rest of your day the best you can.
I'd buy two of those Lenses immediately. Has the availability been announced?
I recommend to use one on 40D at 100mm and another on FF body at 800mm. No need to z then and it's a perfect setup!
