If you're a paid photographer, you should always have a back-up body. Preferably the same format, but if you have a wide array of good lenses, then you should be fine with a smaller sensor.

What!?!? No Nikon?

I chose the 10D (which I have used in the last year or so), but I also have a Nikon FE (bought new in 1983) and an FM2n (bought new in 1988 or so). I don't know where these are at the moment, but I know I have them somewhere.....

I have a 30D that doesn't see much use, but now that it would only fetch
around $400, I'm keeping it as a backup body. One day maybe I'll sell it to a
relative for a great price.

My plan now is it keep it in the car most of the time with the Tamron 17-50/2.8 that
I'd also not get much for if I sold it. [It has a minor scratch on the front element,
which makes buyers afraid. It's sharp though.]

I've been shooting more film lately, true story!

I have 2 Nikon FM2Ns which will go to the grave with me.

A Canon EOS 1N, per above comment.

And lastly, a Mamiya 6 (90's version) that is loads of fun but spotty on occasion because of the way I use it (metering situations, focussing situations, etc.) It usually travels with a Sekonic light meter and a cheap Velbon tripod.

¡Viva Film! ¡Viva Digital! ¡Viva el arte!

I am not only keeping my old SLRs but buying back all those that I foolishly sold. Memories are worth any money.

I have a 10D I keep as a backup body. I really only use it about once every 2 months, and even that is very sparingly. I have it solely as a backup body. If my 30D were to die, or has to go in for service, I don't want to be without a camera for a few weeks. Also, I do a couple paid shoots every year, and I won't be without two camera bodies on a paid gig....if one fails I need to be able to pick right up where I left off.

For me the monetary value is too low for me to contemplate selling anything. That does not mean I won't 'trade-in' my 1DMKIII [gladly] for the IV and keep my 350D/1D/1DMKIIN/5D

If I were to trade the 5D for a 5D2 I might do that ~ but new batteries and a new grip is too much of a pain

I bought a Canon TX from KEH that i have never used. I picked it for $55.00 mostly for nostagic reasons. Nice little cam, and the light meter works. Also looks nice on the bookshelf.

Hi,

Mostly due to space constraints, I tend to get rid of gear I'm no longer using/probably
won't use again, but that said, I've still got:

-Bronica GS-1 outfit

-Nikon FE somebody gave me (though I do use the 35mm F/1.4 that came with it :-) )

-Nikon manual 135 f/2.8 (I use it as a body cap on the FE above :-) ).

-Canon Eos Rebel T2

-Canon 24-70L (haven't used in a year at least, but its a Really Sharp copy I was hanging on to in case I go to FF).

-A bunch of pentax and soligor M42 lenses I now keep around as props...

-A box of various hot lights (haven't touched 'em since I got studio flashes - I keep thinking of them as "spares", but realistically I'd probably use a bunch of speedlights before I'd touch them again, so...)

Best,

rkg

Nikon F2AS I bought when I was in high school, working for a local newspaper and doing some wedding and trade publication work on the side. I've kept it for the same reason I still have a hub cap from by '64 Plymouth Valiant.

I kept my 300D, thinking my daughter would graduate to it. She is still using her S3 IS and will be for a while. So for now, I've loaned it to my neighbor until I sell him my 30D, when Canon comes out with something better than the 50D.

Still have my 10D that will be 6 years old this year! Never going to sell it, was my first DSLR and happy to keep it. Shot some stuff in the garden with it the other day and it was great fun to use. Not a patch on my 1d though.

I also kept my 300D, I also have an older eos film body which I don't even think works..... I considered selling the 300D, but I've been thru a lot with that camera, and while it's not my 40D, it still takes great portraits (or maybe I do?)... the main reason I had to upgrade is that I have taken well over 40K photos with the body (unreliable shutter at this point), and as I am beginning to do more stuff where consistency and readyness is important, the buffer is simply too slow on the 300D.

Thanks for all the interesting replies, folks.
In the way of stuff that doesn't fit the poll, I've kept:
A Pentax 645n outfit with film inserts, lenses, dedicated flash.
A Mamiya 7 outfit that I really intend to continue using.
A Konica rangefinder.
A Voigtlander body specifically kept for use with the 12mm/5.6.
A Yashica Mat 124G 6x6 TLR.
A "Miniature Speed Graphic" [6x9 cm], ca. 1940.
The Miranda Sensorex outfit that was my first serious camera, 1966 or 67.
Plus a few oddball cameras of no monetary value and little usability.

Just can't seem to let go of my D30. Something in the color rendition of the pictures I think.......
Slightly off the survey topic. I have managed to off load all my film stuff except a Spotmatic I bought in Japan in 68.: Sort of like an old pal..........

Don't let go of that Spotmatic! It will mean even more to you in another few years!

I need to pull out some of the old beasts and exercise their shutters.

Canon K2 film camera. My wife bought me it as a Christmas gift. She probably wishes she hadn't looking back now...
