I've been working on a new diffuser for the MT-24EX and it was warm enough today to go shooting insects. Shot at life size with a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens.

Like the last shot.
The bugs in the other shots seem a bit dark although I appreciate the exposure difficulties with bright yellow flowers.

Thanks Brian
One of the reasons why I normally don't shoot at life size against yellow is for the very reason you listed -the subject comes out dark. But with the MPE-65mm and MT-24EX if I can get good diffusion at 1x then the light is even better at higher magnifications so I did all of my testing today at life size.

As much as I dislike to not get some of the ambient light in a shot, these are REALLY nice, John...IMHO. I have holy hell exposing yellow.

Thanks Kenny
Unfortunately I do most of my shooting against yellow -I like going after active subjects.

What's the new diffuser made of? Looks like it works fine.
I'm using a Puffer diffuser on the fill flash (the head toward the top of the lens) to get a larger light source and it's giving me better diffusion than the Sto-Fen. But I'm still using the Sto-Fen on the key flash (the head that's off to the side) because I don't want that light going everywhere -too difficult to get the shadows that I'm looking for. The Sto-Fen, because I wrap the outside in Gaffers tape, acts like a snoot to keep the light in a relatively tight spot. I was testing it out on my kitchen table by shooting my son's Hot Wheels cars and it looked good, but I needed to see how it performed in the field -too many things have worked at my kitchen table only to fail miserably in the "real world"...
In a nut shell I'm finally using the flash heads on the MT-24EX in a key and fill configuration. I even have the fill at a different angle than the key (the fill is higher).
@ n0b0: All I'd have to do is swap them on the Canon flash mount -no problem. I know of a few people who shoot with the flash heads crossed just to keep the cables from flopping around. The E-TTL pre-flash doesn't fire from both flash heads at the same time so the controller doesn't care what side of the lens you put the flash heads on. But if you use ratio control you need to know which head is where...
