I've got that same tripod (3021BPRO) and I've used it with other poles through the horizontal slot, so you're not limited to just the ~1.5' center pole. It also makes a great stand for something like a 7' octa. And the center pole does have a metal ring, which works just like a boom when it's horizontal.
