Hi everyone!
Im about to get the 5Dmk2 and even tho FF might not be optimal for macro work i would love to try and get into it as well!
I was woundering what i should go for when it comes to lens + addons?
I would love to try and shoot similar abstract macro images like in this link, and then get so close that i dont have to crop like mad so i can make decent big print out of it too. I guess this will be harder since its a FF.
Quite a few of us here are using FF for macro work. There are no issues, except perhaps that the depth of field is even thinner with a full frame body than a crop body (using the same aperture).
You cannot go wrong with the EF 100mm f2.8. It's excellent glass, and on a full frame body, it's not that long, so it's quite versatile, too. I even used it as a walk-around lens on my 5D for a while.
I now also own the 5D mkII, and it's every bit as brilliant as my 5D, and then some, including suitability for macro work. The built-in dust shaker and Live View are welcome additions, as is the incredible resolution
Hi! and thanx for the reply! =)
If you look at the pictures at the link up there.. what would be needed to get that kind of magnification? Would the 100mm plus Kenko tubes be the way to go or is there any other way that gives better end result?
Regards

The 100mm and a set of Kenko ext tubes would be a great idea. At min focus with all the kenkos will give you a 2:1 mag (FOV width of 17.5mm with your camera).

I prefer a 150mm for macro work on my 5D since it gives me more working distance to achieve a given magnification than the 100mm. You need to get closer in the first palce for frame filling shots, so extra working distance is a bonus. The 5D II though has the same pixel density as the 20D which will allow for some heavy cropping if needed yet still retaining plenty of pixels for good sized prints
I often use a 150 + 36mm ext tube + 1.4x TC if needed, although not as much as I now have the MP-E 65 for higher mag work and usually just use the 150 + ext tube at most.

Hi! and thanx!
Going for the 150mm sounds like an good idea together with the tubes. Its just manual focus then right?
Also, could you share some photos taken with the 150mm + tubes just to give me an idea of what could be done with this combo + 5D =D
Regards!
I enjoy closeup flower photography very much. I used the EF 100mm f/2.8 macro for a couple of years on the 20d. When I bought a 5d, I continued to use it for awhile. The lure of the 180mm f3.5 finally got the best of me and I bought one. I have used it for about a year now and it is absolutely incredible. As has been said, a bit more working distance helps at times. I'm not much of a tech maven, so I can't explain why it's so, but the images from the 180 just look better, the bokeh is more pleasant. If you get a chance to try one, by all means do so.
I agree with Whayne: The 150mm makes even more sense on the 5D (I have both the 100mm and the 150mm). Only one "issue" with the 150mm - it's rather heavy!
This is with the 5D, the Sigma 150mm and 1.4X Sigma TC:

Was woundering.. would a 580EXII mounted on the hotshoe cast shadows when using 5D and 150 macro with the tubes? Or is it a must to have a bracket for the flash?
