p.1 #1 · Demb Flip it outdoors?

Does anyone who uses the Flip It use it outdoors? I am having a friendly argument with a friend and I wouldn't think the flip it would be as effective as indoors because the flash light inside is both bounced off a ceiling and the flip it itself whereas outside the flash light shooting upwards would be lost with no ceiling. Does anyone have example shots taken outside with the flip it? And if you do, what position do you use the flip it in outdoors?

TIA!!

I used to 2nd for a pretty well respected photographer, and he used the flip it outside... worked quite well for fill, using the sun as main. I dont have his images but he's a member on FM, dragonflydm. HTH

You can use it outdoors with the card pushed forward so as not to waste light. Used this way, the light is immediately redirected off the card forward. The resulting shadows aren't that much different from direct flash, but you cut down on specular highlights on the subject.

Otherwise, you can decide to waste the majority of the light upward, and use only what goes forward from the card. Still no reflief from harder shadows, though.

It isn't as effective as using it indoors, but is useful outdoors. Aim the surface down a bit, to get as much bounce as possible off the Flip since there's no other surface to take advantage of. And the greatest benefit of doing this outdoors is it simply gets your light source that much further away from the lens. If you're close to your subject the difference can be substantial, but for more distant subjects the effect diminishes to zero.

I use mine outside, inside, in limos, anywhere I need light. I can honestly make the statement that I have never shot direct flash ever. I also have a flip it on, if I don't need the light, I just "flip it" outa the way.

Follow Chris's instructions, that's how I work it outside as well. They do well on a stand as well. So light and small they won't catch much wind and make stands fall over if you don't weight them down.

This was taken with the fiip-it tilted forward a bit iirc.

And for comparison this was shot with a soft box on the speedlight and the light off camera.

I know I have some shots where I used it outside. I'll have to search for a bit to find them.

Here you go, this was shot in my mad skillz flip it days
