p.1 #1 · withered wood

hi everybody,

i've finally worked up the courage to post a picture in this area!! like many i'm aspiring to become better and have struggled over the years to find my style. plus, many times i just don't have the confidence to post. i've dabbled with landscape, people and sports and i feel that my best work (to me) is in the form of abstract or 'artsy' style pictures. in any case, i'm back in front of the camera after a few months of only taking pictures of my now 18 month old son. and it feels good to go out and take some pictures

this particular picture was taken in november with use of a tripod. very little post processing was done.

so...i've decided to take the plunge into the deep end. i hope you like my picture. i must also mention that i was hesitant adding a title as i am interested whether or not you see anything other than the obvious. so i added a title because 'untitled' just looked boring and not very inviting for people to open this thread.

thanks for looking and any C&C is greatly appreciated!!

Welcome to the club, I think your description applies to many posting here - I know it fits me - so don't be bashful

Looks like most folks are traveling or otherwise tied up today - well, someone has to watch the office

Scott G., Kaden, and others often weigh-in on this type of image so let's see what happens. I like it but this monitor is not calibrated so must wait until later to really take a look (other requirements permitting).

regards,

Bob

Cecile,
Good of you to join the forum.
I find it hard to comment on abstract images; its hard to react beyond whether the image resonates with me or not, and harder to judge what impressions are being explored by the photographer/artist.
I think the image has several interesting elements: the verticals, the range of textures, and the tonal variations. My own style, and thats all it is, would be to have a bit more contrast and/or saturation in the image.I think your framing/matting does not do the image justice and pulls my eye out to the edge of the first mat, then the second.

I have taken a complete stab in the dark - I'll pull it if you object - as Scott already mentioned, abstract images - who can anticipate what a viewer may or may not like - I guess what matters is how you feel about the image since you are the toughest critic you'll probably have

Anyway, played a bit to add some snap, don't know if I've made progress or not, you'll have to be the judge of that...

Bob and Scott - Thank you so much for the C&C!!! i absolutely agree with the framing. don't know what i was thinking there - plain sloppiness on my part

either that or i really (still) do have what is refered to as 'pregnancy brain' and i just plain old forgot to take the other frame out before posting

Bob - i take no objection to you having played around with my image and i thank you for having done so. i didn't even think about adding more contrast and saturation. i'm always afraid of making a picture too artificial (probably more from my lack of PP knowledge). but than again, this is an abstract so what is real anyways?

your image shows off much more detail and IMO gives a totally different story to mine. essentially, to me they are 2 different images. the original to me represented novembers muted colours and boring state of half dead and half alive. probably didn't help that when i was out taking pictures that day i had a cold and sinuses were acting up so everything to me looked muted and 'dead'!! your image represents (again, to me) a 'deeper' impressionism, teeming with life and vibrancy. basically the opposite polar of mine. does this make sense??

in short...i like yours better

Bob and Scott - Thanks you both again so much for helping me out and giving me the confidence to keep posting and knowing that i'm on the right track and that i shouldn't sell my equipment!!

Cecile

PS - this also gives me the confidence and the courage to reply more (or C&C) to others!

Cecile,

Thanks for the kind comments.

What I like most about FM is that folks are respectful of each other, no feeding frenzy as on some other forums, and we're all here to learn

regards & Happy Holidays,

Bob
