These are also my first set with the Canon 50D. For those of you having problems with the 40D and the MT-24EX the 50D's light meter is a lot more reliable. But it is also noisier than the 40D...
At the risk of getting flamed...please tell me you haven't turned into a 'tree hugger', John.
Kidding aside, excellent shots. Think I prefer the first for composition; light is nice and warm. Congrats on the 50D if it's a new toy. I picked up an old D2X (too good a price to pass up) and am hoping to find out how it does shooting macro. Merry Christmas to you and yours, John.
Nice shots John... How about some details like ISO and 100% crop of the noise you're talking about. I'm thinking about upgrading from my 450D to either 50D or the older 5D.

Congrats on the new camera Kenny -definitely in capable hands!

The ISO is 100 -pretty much standard for me when using a flash. The noise shows up as banding when I'm adjusting levels in post and I noticed some softness that wasn't due to diffraction or motion blur -I had control of the motion in the scene and going from F11 to F8 at 3x didn't change anything but the depth. Oddly enough I enabled high ISO noise reduction and I started getting sharper images -something that I didn't expect when at ISO 100. If you want to keep shooting macro with a crop factor camera the 50D isn't a bad choice -but neither is the Xti. I'm thinking of getting a 5D for natural light closeup work.
These shots look fantastic, John. Amazing detail and lighting as always.
I have been patiently awaiting your shots from the 50D after reading in another post that you were getting one, as I have considered upgrading from my 30D. While I have read about noise being an issue, it has always been in relation to the amount of 50D noise in comparison to the 40D, and that the difference is not extreme by an means. However, I do find it strange that high ISO noise reduction would make a difference at ISO 100. Have you noticed any diffraction issues with the 15mp sensor? Have you used the live-view feature with the display?
For now, I have pretty much convinced myself to keep my 30D, and may get a 5D as well, since prices for them have fallen dramatically. But it would be nice to have the newer features of the 50D though, such as the new screen, live-view, lens adjust, etc. If Canon would only make a camera with the 5D sensor and with specs of the 50D - that would be great.

If the 30D had a better display I would have bought one -I use the histogram a lot.

Either it made a difference, or I was just better at controlling movement in the scene today (no motion blur).

Not that I can tell -but I have noticed an increase in resolution -seems the MPE-65 can feed those 15MP pretty well...

Not yet -might try it for some abstracts in the house. LV doesn't fit my shooting style in the field...

Brilliant shots, John Looks like your new body can handle all black backgrounds with the MT24EX, or did you have to guide it a little, using FEC?
My fave hover is no. 1, I think. Very nice composition
JCC and n0b0: The old 5D is a fantastic camera, IQ-wise. No crop camera comes close, in my humble opinion. The only drawback for macro work is dust, esp. when using the MP-E. I now have the 5DmkII also, but the old 5D holds up very well against it, I think. A couple of comparison shots can be found here http://eyvindness.zenfolio.com/p747711674

Lovely captures John. Temps here at 10'C last couple of days but not many flying bugs around.

Thanks Brian
I'm kinda stunned to be shooting Hoverflies this late in the year -even saw a species of solitary bee that I've never seen before as well as a pair of Blue Carpenter Bees that wouldn't let me get close.
Looks like we might be down to 0C by Christmas though...

I always use a little negative FEC -lately I've been shooting at -2/3 FEC. The good thing about the 50D is that when I make changes to the MT-24EX's FEC they really work -unlike the 40D where changing the FEC made no difference...
I'm hoping that Canon does a refresh on the MT-24EX like they've done on the 580EX II and the 430 EX II.

Thanks for that bit of info. Would you happen to know if the 5D is as bad as the XSi/450D when it comes to dust? If it's better then I'll get it, if it's worse I'll have to forget about it. I live in a fairly dusty place sometime I have wait for a heavy rain to clean the leaves in my backyard.

It seems to work just fine on my 12MP crop body. Having that experience, I personally don't believe that most lenses outresolve the 50D as some people have claimed.

Thanks Steve
That's really the direction that I've tried to take my photography. Someone at another forum said that I make "ugly things cute" -I'll take that as a compliment
