On the island of Koh Kred, north of Bangkok, just across the river (or the canal, actually, since that part of the river is man-made. Koh Kred wasn't an island until 1722) from Pak Kred, there are potters. Seeing them in action is more like watching alchemists, making art from clay, at a pace that is mind blowing.

S5 with Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 @ 29mm, f/2.8 and 1/10s

Seriously though- this is a nice shot that makes me reflect on how differently we all spend our days. Some tied to a computer and desk, others up to their elbows in clay...etc.

Hi,

I like the portrait of the potter.

I particularly like the figure in action and the composition.

I noticed in shot tech notes that the shot was made with the lens "wide open" and the shutter speed seems very slow 1/10s.

Was this a very dark scene?

It appears as if he is lit by natural sunlight (ambient) and appears to have plenty of light on him and his surroundings. Just curious.

It was very dark, and the little light there was, came from windows in the ceiling behind him, so I could hardly see his face at all. I shot at ISO 200 to be sure that I could lighten up his face without getting a lot of noise. If I had exposed for the face, I would probably had blown highlights all over the place.

Very tricky place to take photos, and I had too little time, but I'm going back for more
