I have just recently aquired my new 5DmkII and am looking for a great macro lens, mainly for photographing Jewellery, and am tossing up between the 2 Sigma lenses. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or comments on if I'd be better with one or the other or if It will make a good enough difference to pay the extra and get the 180mm.
The Sigma 180mm is quite beastly and a bit of an older design than the newer 150mm. You won't notice a huge difference in how you take macros, but the 150mm is cheaper and a better overall design.
Read this review and then the review on the other lens you mentioned. Notice that both lenses used are mine. I have sold the 180 since. I kept the 150, might be a hint.
Thanks for your thoughts, I was pretty set on the 150mm and you all conformed that it was a good choice. Now I just need to find someone who stocks it in Sydney Aus. Cheers All!
Mr-Blades.
Iam a Sigma oriented photographer. I own the 150, never the 180. I have owned two of the Canon 100 EF macros. The 150 for me, beats the Canons, tripod collar, focal length and IQ. The 180 seems a little long etc.
Good luck
Harry
I have the Canon 60mm EF-s on my 20D and the working distance gets me too close to the piece that I am photographing, so 100mm would still be a bit too close. Reflections on polished metals are a pain in the butt, I don't really like seeing me and the camera in the reflections. So I figure the extra reach that I'd get from the 150 would makie life alot easier. Plus I think the Sigma Lenses of this level are much better value for money over the Canon. Cheers.
The Sigma 150 is truly a stellar lens. Beautiful image quality...great bokeh, great color and absolutely spectacular sharpness. It also handles wonderfully and has pretty fast focusing for a macro lens.
I've posted this several times, but it just speaks to the IQ of the Sigma 150:
