Google AdWords (search results only) work well for us. Those seem to be largely area-dependent as some here have had zero luck with them. We also have a full-page ad in a local wedding resource guide coming up, so we'll see on that one.
Aside from that, the rest has been either word of mouth or connections we have.
The Knot isn't worth it unless you're on page one. As for advertising, I rely mainly on word of mouth. Having a physical location also works well for my business.
As far as paid advertisements, I'm doing:
www.mywedding.com (top google listing, worth it or the traffic) and a print ad in Weddings Magazine (a large publication in North Carolina). Also Saathee (a publication aimed at the local Southeast Asian Pakistani and Indian communities) is something I'm looking into.

Word of mouth seems to be the best choice....
Interested in hearing about your results from the local wedding guide..
Thanks!

Thanks, Liza. In my city, Austin, there are only 47 'togs registered with The Knot, so don't you think my chances would be alright?

Maybe. The Knot seems to have a lot of budget variety brides, yet their advertising fees are extremely high. I've not seen anything positive reported by the photographers who frequent DWF. YMMV.
