p.1 #1 · Too conventional

Hello,

I have been following the forum for some time but never really posted anything as I am not a professional photographer but only a beginner and I shoot Pentax instead of Nikon or Canon.
I always see some beautiful image posted in the forum so I am confident of the quality of the audience but not of my own (yet - I think that I am improving so does my Mom :-)

I am trying my hand on some Sepia coloring when converting to B&W.
I am wondering if I did not loose the fog effect and leave only a very pedestrian composition.

Thank you.

Luc, this is not a professional photgrapher's forum. If so, most of us would be gone...

As for your tool of choice, we'll leave that for the flame wars on the Nikon & Canon threads....

You have an absolutely wonderful shot with beautiful toning. It's great with its layers of depth. I'd be proud to have it as my first post...

I second what Bernie said.
We aspire to be professional quality, but few if any pros here.
Welcome to the forum. Please add your feedback to others' posts.
I think it is a beautiful image. I like the diagonals of the posts pointing in the direction the boat will travel. Tones are very pleasing.
The only change I would suggest is to adjust your black point. I dont think the posts need to be as dark as they are, and I'd like to see a bit of detail in the wood.

Welcome Luc,

As already mentioned, I doubt few, if any of us will ever quit our day jobs . I think I can safely say most participate to share and learn - happy to have you aboard.

One additional comment - an occasional recurring theme amongst posts: it is the person behind the lens that visualizes and makes the image, not the gear...as Bernie indicated, the gear folks can evangelize on other forums.

Lovely image - non-calibrated monitor here but looks great regardless. I like the lines, diagonal, horizon, everything. One or two nits: perhaps clone out the bird (white speck) astern of the ship; clone out items at water level near LHS.

As an item of personal interest, I convert first then tone. Is there an advantage/disadvantge in the workflow you described?

regards, and again, welcome,

Bob

+1 to all the above. It's a lovely composition. Got a wow from over my shoulder, and that's a tough audience these days :-)

Personally, I would like to see the ship a little darker (posts lighter would work too, or possibly even both,) but she who is sitting on the sofa disagrees. Take what you can from that. BTW from previous experience she's usually right..........

Equipment? They're all magic picture boxes, the name on the front means nothing, it's all about the artistry and understanding of the person behind it.

Thank you very much for all the positive comments and suggestions.
I will be working on bringing more details into the posts as suggested.
As far as equipment is concerned I am very happy with my Pentax gear -excellent lenses at affordable price.
Of course if I happen to find $10,000 I could always consider a D700 body and set of professional lenses or change my car :-)

Cheers,

Luc
