p.1 #1 · Butterflies

The butterfly house is open at chester zoo(finally!) and I've been lent a 24-70L for a week.
Breaking the news about the cost of one of these to the wife should be a sight (and sound) to behold! However, my obvious delight and the (probably coincidental) improvement in picture quality, might just swing it........

Anyway, the pictures. 3 very different images of butterflies up for c&c today.

Macro bw, and my personal favorite today. This butterfly is naturally mainly in browns, it has a wingspan of about 5 inches. I can get the scientific name if anyone is really interested.

No idea about this one, I just thought the image was good.

And a big blue to finish with, these guys are so clumsy!

Someone stop me if I'm over-posting! I'm just having a very very keen phase :-)

Silver,

I like the point counter-point of the filled 1/2 versus empty 1/2 of #2 (on the diagonal).

Could you post a color version of #1?

I've never done much with macro other than using a bellows many years ago - what lighting was used? The Exif reports 'flash fired' - on camera, off camera, etc?

Thanks for the fascinating images,

Bob

Hi Silver,
First is interesting and quite detailed. I would not have thought to use BW, but it is interesting. Image suffers from what appears to be a combination of compression artifacts in downsizing for web, and significant noise, especially noticeable in the darker background areas.
2. Very interesting framing as Bob J indicated. I like it.
3. A bit confusing with such narrow DOF and the butterfly in and out of focus along the depth of the image.
I hear its a great lens, but I would not have thought to take/borrow one for butterflies. Instead I would have used (if available) a dedicated Macro lens, like the Canon 100, Sigma 105 for this particular subject.
The 24-105 is often considered by folks considering the 24-70. There are pros and cons. For me, the range enables use as my usual lens. It is about 15% less expensive, a bit lighter, has IS. But it is slower, possibly slightly less sharp (depending on who you ask, copies).

here's the colour version, I actually like it a whole lot more this morning than I did last night :-)
Flash was bounced from the translucent white plastic roof. There was also a strong light (halogen poss.) that you can see hitting the top of the post.

I'm uncertain about no.3 too, I was hoping for enlightenment. I think confusing might be the word.

I'm really looking forward to going back when it's sunny!

I didn't borrow the lens specifically, with butterflies in mind, it was simply an opportunistic loan!

The 24-70 is an awesome lens, (allowing for my limited experience), and i have the 70-200 f4L so it fits nicely with what I have, and, if I'm investing at this level, the extra 100-150 quid is, quite frankly, irrelevant! (yes, i am lucky i can say that!)

Color looks much better and the noise is down.
Sounds like you will have a great setup with the 24-70 and your longer zoom. Enjoy!
