I am betting if you ask about their ring, they will tell you all kinds of stuff. It could be as simple as commenting on how beautiful it is and they proudly share their story without you even asking.... just a guess

Yea.. I usually ask to see, ask who picked it out.. why they chose it? it usually gets the ball rolling and they tell you everything.
I have ring envy reading this thread I espcially like the ring with the train. Will never ever spend that much money on jewelry though (say I now today )
Holy crap, Gabe. That is the definition of a rock. She's wearing like, two of my houses on her finger. I would've been pretty nervous around that. Good move, going simple. No photo woulda be worth the risk during a wedding.

East SF Bay Area, across the bridge. Why, what can a mil get ya in Philly? Or maybe I don't wanna know! I rarely see rings past the 2 carat mark, too.
Ha, I know. It will get you more than the Bay area, but it's still pretty expensive. 1/2 mill will hook you up pretty good though.

Yeah, my wifes is *only* 1.5 karats... and I could hardly afford to pay for it...
and for the sake of the topic, it is the biggest ring I have shot to date.... perhaps I need up up my game. Also, FWIW, this was my first ring shot... pentax 100mm macro with an EF adapter... all manual.

Just remember guys - it isn't about the size of the diamond at all. My husband could have proposed with a candy ring pop and my answer still would have been yes
You know, it's so interesting to compare different cultures.
In *some* cultures of the East (some Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures) no one really cares about diamonds. the whole "diamond is a girl's best friend" isn't really understood. It's more about gold than rocks. there are weddings where the girl might be given a $1,000 dollar ring, but $80,000 in gold. Also, in the East, they don't do the whole 12 karat half-copper-half-gold deal either. You bring 22 karats (almost pure gold), period.
I tried to figure out why the emphasis on gold was so much more than diamonds and I was told that it has to do with "outlook". Apparently, diamonds are only rare due to commercial limitations on the number of diamonds released to the public by the major diamond mining companies. There are tuns of giant diamond mines everywhere, so the value is more about cut, clarity, etc. coupled with market control. As far as gold goes, it's always been rare, has always been treasured, and has been used as the standard of money for a large part of modern history. Who really knows ::shrug::
The ring in Gabe's photo looks like is going to fall off, the actual ring itself is so thin. 6 carat is so gaudy as to be absolutely impractical. She can't wear it anywhere!

Actually, I think that a 6 karat rock just makes it look thin. I shot a 3 karat rock, but it had a huge band and the ring didn't even look that big because of it. I hope that makes sense, I think it does.

Yeah I really hope those clasps around the rock don't fail! That would be one seriously expensive thing to loose down the side of the couch.
