Well Ed, I think you will find this work is right up Tim K's alley. He is working diligently on making this light work. By the way #4 looks just wonderful to me for these conditions #1 seems to have a color shift in it but can't put my finger on it but leaning toward green?? Otherwise it looks darn good. #2,3 maybe could benefit from some level adjustments as the blacks look too black and the whites a little washed, maybe someone can help me help you here buddy Some pretty reflections in the water on the last one Ed. That is tough shooting in those conditions but you aren't far off on them IMO.

p.1 #4 · HOODED MERGANSERS

Ed, don't listen to Karl, he is just jealous of the copious amounts of daylight we get this time of year! Afternoon sunsets and all that

First off 1 & 4 are wonderful! It looks like with 1 you may have PP'd a bit too far somehow? Not sure, it does look off in color. Kudos for the focus on the face in 4, easy to miss at that angle and you nailed it. 2,3 and 6 all have what I call the Hoody cloaking device. For some reason these guys can just look out of focus when by rights they should be in focus. I have lots of deletes just for that reason.

You don't have any exif info on these, do you mind sharing some exposure details? Some 2,3,6 look like motion blur, you may have been steady but they are moving(?)

I must say I really like 1&4 with 3 an almost that may be able to be fixed still. Did you shoot RAW? I like the facial expression in 3 a lot.

Tim

PM me if would rather exchange some info that way

Those are fine shots, Ed, especially No.#1, #4 and #5.
Male Hoods are tricky to get exposed well (read "impossible without PP"), but you did it on #1. I'd perhaps backpedal on saturation a bit, the male's flanks seem overly orange.
Also, if you are shooting from the shore, you'd seldom be able to get close enough to them. You can also try to sneak up on them from a jetty or a pier as I do. Them diving ducks like deep water and they are easily spooked.
