Can I put my Vivitar 285HV Flash on my Canon 30D without a safe converter with out frying any thing, I know that some of the older flashes you can't put them on a new digital camera or else thing will start to melt.

thank
Alan

Depends on the age of your flash unit. Way back in the day they put out a whopper of a charge, but the units produced in the last few years are completely safe. The only way I know of to be certain is to put a meter on the flash foot.

I just bought it new, less than a year ago. What should the meter read if I were to test it?

About 6 volts is safe according the Strobist. See at this link.

In the darkside we have a small unit that goes between the flash and the shoe that guards against that problem. Is there anything similar for canon?

Oh ya, I have one, I don't think its canon or nikon specific, its a "safe converter hots hoe adapter" I can't remember the brand, but it has a hotshoe on the top and bottom, and a PC sync cord socket in the front.

I was just asking because with the Vivitar 285 (that thing is huge, i'm sure most of you have held or seen one) things just feel too loose and wiggily on top of my camera with the adapter on there too.
This thing works too for any flash (even your dad's old flash) with out a pc sync for PW's
