I am looking to buy a light meter but really cannot stretch to the Sekonic 358 just now, however, I can rake up enough to get the 308 - does anyone know whether that one would be worth investing in now or should I wait until I can afford the 358?
I've been chimping it for long enough and really want to start dealing properly with ratios and I believe the meter is the way to go to get better results so any help with this would be much appreciated.
Put it this way. If you buy the L-308 you'll probably want something better at some point, but you will not outgrow the L-358.
A meter makes setting ratios by the numbers easier, but ultimately what matters most what matters more is understanding how light and dark shadows affect the perception and what is age and gender appropriate.
That was pretty much what I thought might be said, I guess I could always sell the 308 on but will probably just wait until I can afford the 358 in a couple of months.
An option would be the live.com cashback. While you do need to wait for the money, for small purchases, I've gotten the money back pretty quick. But then again, if it's only a couple months, waiting won't hurt. Cash can take upto 60 days to receive.
Looks like it may be only on the .com site for US buyers and to top that I cannot find any sellers in the UK anyway.
I have just ordered the 358 from warehouseexpress here in the UK and it should be with me on Monday (along with some other items I really shouldn't have purchased), I have put it on my business for now I need to start charging for some of the shoots I do
I just got a used L308 off eBay in the last couple of months. It is not programable or does have the calibrate to camera function that the 358 has or does it accept the PW modules.
If you need a daylight meter get it, if you need a meter that will take flash readings either one at a time or all of them together it will do it plus you can use it in cabled mode. Best to download the manuals for the 308 and the 358 and see what the difference is and see if it will work for you without some of the tools that the bigger meters have. It works for me currently but when I migrate to Pocket Wizards I will be selling it and getting one of the bigger units but they may be a while.
