p.1 #1 · Pairing a Leica R 560/6.8 with the 1.4x tcon
Today was the first time I used the Leica R 560/6.8 with my Canon 1.4X teleconvertor on my 5D. The samples below were either handheld, shot with a monopod, or I held the lens in my hand while bracing it against my truck window. Oh, viewfinder wasn't too dark at f/5.6 but got quite dark at f/11. The grebes were constantly moving and the Kestrels head was on a swivel the whole time. I think with better support and larger subject this will be a good combo to use in certain situations.

Looks like you have some wild sharpening going on (or bizarre image resize). Lots of jaggies.... Kestrel looks like you used a magic lasso and cut it out from the background. Hard to tell what's going on.

?? Didn't notice that myself until you said something. PP was just a quick levels adjustment, LAB curves to boost color, and then smart sharpen just to see what I could get with this combo. Oh yeah first was a crop at 72 dpi and then resizing the longest side to 800. I do see it though on the back side in the shadow area and some weird artifacting with the cable itself. Can't tell you why and did not use magic lasso.
This shot has it some too on the tail section, any ideas?

Were some of these significantly cropped? Detail-wise it looks like you've cropped a good deal of that image. I think part of it might also be the levels adjustment-- looks like the bird and cable were too dark as shot and that part of the image was brightened quite a bit... it looks artificial to me in a way.
Of course, none of this really matters that much if the prints look nice. And I do like the shots of the kestrel overall.

They are all about 50% crops. You know I did adjust the midrange of the levels on these this time. They exposed a bit funny and that's where it seemed to be off. Normally I'll go into the levels adjustment, hold down the alt key, and adjust just the black and whites, not the mids.
