p.1 #1 · dual purpose light stands question

I'm looking to purchase 2 / 13 foot light stands that I can dual use as background stands. Is there a way to convert these type of stands for a dual purpose use. Basically I need 2 /13 foot stands for indoor sports strobing, but I would like to get dual purpose use out of the stands when I'm not shooting strobe sports to convert to T&I background setup. ( How would you convert the top to accept a cross bar? ) And yes I am looking into 3 smaller stands for the lights on T&I or portraits shoots.

What stands would you recommend for the 13'ers if this conversion setup is possible?

Look into one (or two) of these:

http://www.filmtools.com/mingripheadb.html
http://www.pictureline.com/products/1628/Matthews_2-1/2"_Hollywood_Head/

Here's a good link with various models and pictures on how they can be used:

So basically any decent stands will work, and you'll need a bar or pipe or what-have-you to go in between...

Light stands have standard studs on top. The simplest approach would be to use a cross bar designed to fit over the top of them and lock.

If you look at this link you'll see such a background system by Bogen:

The cross bar is sold separately for $55. Just enter BO2983 into the search field at B&H to find it (cut and pasting the URL didn't work - too long)

Just creating a hook / loop out of coat hanger wire would get the job done also much cheaper.

Just go out an buy this: http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/MF6095/

I bought my set on sale for $139.

Basically you are getting two light stands with top nuts (they hold down the background holder), a 12' sectional cross bar, and a carrying bag to hold it all.

When not being used as background stands just remove the top nut.

I have other calumet light stands and I can tell you with complete authority that there is absolutely no difference between these 12' calumet stands and my other 12' calumet stands. The only difference is what they came with.

I use 2 13ft Avenger stands with grip arms to hold the backdrop. I've actually moved to C-Stands now but the theory is the same.
