I just got back from a little trip where I took my Crumpler 6mdh and stuffed it with the 5D2, and all my Voigtlanders (125, 180, 90, 75, 20 and 40).

You could say that the 20 and 40 add up to one lens, based on size that is.

Very true! That small size that packs sooo much quality is why I love the Voigtlanders.

My travel kit is now down to:
Kodak SLRn + Sigma 12-24mm (now replaced with Voigtlander 20mm f/3.5 SL )
D700 #1 + 24-70mm f2.8 AF-S (most used)
D700 #2 + Nikon 50mm f1.2

In most cases, I end up placing the Sigma 12-24mm in the bag anyways just so I have the 12mm focal length when i need wide angle. The Skopar 20mm f3.5 SLII is becoming my favorite wide angle prime - compact and pretty good image quality.

When travelling, I seldom use anything longer than 70mm and a flash is hardly ever needed for my kind of shooting. If I absolutely need fill in flash, the on board flash units on the D700 and SLRn work out well. In some cases, I have taken an SB600 with me as well.

It took a lot of looking but I finally got them all. After I got my last edition to the kit - the 90mm - I sold off my 85L II that I never carried around because of the size! That is how good these Voigtlanders are.

Thats a tough one as I only use primes and I dont think I could get by on a long trip with only three lenses...These three would be my first choice for a three bag kit bag though:
Nikon 35mm f1.4 AIS
Canon FL 55mm f1.2
Sigmatel 135mm f1.8

Zuiko 21/3.5
Summicron R 35/2
Minolta 85/1.7 (proudly converted myself to EF mount)

Or just Zeiss 35-70 plus something in f/1.2-f/1.4 range for low light

Sounds like most people on this forum are landscape or street photographer. No wildlifers here?! Am waiting to see if anybody says 600/f4 IS or 800/f5.6 and a Sherpa

7-14mm, 14-42mm, 45-200mm + E-P1
Had this combo for my recent trip to Vietnam. It is light as feather and tiny in size.

Heh. Another one of these threads never dying. Some subjects are always interesting.

5D2 and
Zuiko 24/2.8
Zuiko 50/2 Macro or the EF50/1.4 depending on my mood an hour before leaving
Zuiko 100/2.8
A Manfrotto mini tripod
All this with some small bits like cards and batteries in an old Domke Satchel.

Oh. I find it hard to narrow it down to three most of the time.

But looking at our vacations 2007-2009 (all with Canon EOS 5D and later with 5D II), this is how it turned out:

Lanzarote: Carl Zeiss Distagon 28/2.8, Sigma 12-24, Canon EF 24-70 L, Canon EF 50/1.2 L, Canon EF 70-200/2.8 L IS
12-24 pic: http://www.grandins.com/images/galleri/0702_lanzarote/6.jpg
Distagon 28 pic: http://www.grandins.com/images/galleri/0702_lanzarote/9.jpg
70-200 IS pic: http://www.grandins.com/images/galleri/0702_lanzarote/11.jpg
24-70 pic: http://www.grandins.com/images/galleri/0702_lanzarote/10.jpg
Tunisia: For some reason, almost no pics taken, but I brought and used the Canon EF 24-105/4 L IS and some more lenses that I cannot remember using
Some cruises: Sigma 12-24, Canon EF 24-105/4 L IS and Canon EF 85/1.2 L II
---
Turkey: Canon EF 16-35 L I, Canon EF 24-105/4 L I, Canon EF 50/1.2 L
England: Canon EF 16-35/2.8 L I, Canon EF 50/1.2 L
Finland cruise: Canon EF 28-135 IS
Greece: Canon EF 16-35/2.8 L I, Canon E
---
Egypt (last spring): Canon EF 16-35/2.8 L I, Canon EF 70-300 IS, Canon EF 85/1.8 + Pentax Optio W60 (waterproof camera)
Finland cruise (last summer): Canon EF 24/1.4 L I, Canon EF 50/1.2 L
England (last week): Canon EF 50/1.2 L + Pentax Optio W60 (waterproof camera)
Paris (later this year): pretty sure I'll bring Canon EF 24-105/4 L IS and maybe Rokkor 58/1.2 (should I get mine converted, right now its on a shelf) - else I'll bring the 50/1.2 L again...

Slowly moving towards less gear. The Canon EF 24-105 is probably my top travel lens. I do miss Distagon 28/2.8 at times (owned two in the past) - maybe I'll start using my 16-35 II more later on... Also like bringing the 50/1.2 L.

Bags: used LowePro CompuTrekker plus AW but now mostly using LowePro Slingshot 200 AW. The Slingshot gives me some back ache (after a day of walking - maybe I should buy something like Andens bag).

Most of the time my travel kit consists of a 5d, EF 35/2 (cities, people, social stuff) and EF 28-105 3.5-4.5 (stopped down for landscapes).

Both of these with the 28-105.

i think a good 3 (or 4?) lens kit is more based on the body being used, at least more so than is mentioned in this thread.

If i was shooting 3 lenses on a 5D(or 5DII), it would be a 16-35mkII, 35 or 50(1.2)L, and a 70-200/2.8IS....
If D700, it would be 18/2.8af-d, 35/2af-d, and 85/1.4af-d.
if D300, it would be Tokina 11-16/2.8, Nikkor 35/2af-d, and... 85/1.4 af-d
if canon cropper, i'd probably just smash my face in with a mallet instead.

It was all quiet at my desk until I read the last sentence.... Thanks for the laugh!

I'm thinking of buying the new Cosina 40 F2.0 EF Mount Pancake as a traveling lens.
It will be my first MF + Alt lens.

at the moment I have a lot of traveling kits, all with a 5D.
All lenses are Canon though...

- 35 F1.4 (went to France for 2 weeks and all I used was this one)
- 24-105 F4 IS (all rounder, but nothing really special)
- 35 F1.4 + 24-105 F4 IS
- 35 F1.4 + 85 F1.8 ( + 135 F2.0)
- 35 F1.4 + 100 F2.8 IS Macro

^ Weight is an important issue when you're travelling. If you don't want to travel with an anvil in your neck, Canon croppers + Tammy and Zuikos might do very very well.

I'm here in Stockholm with a Voigtlander Color-Skopar 20/3.5 SLII, Canon 24-105/4L IS, and Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 180/4 SL, for my 5D. Oh wait, I also have my CZ Distagon 28/2.8, but promise I won't use it unless absolutely necessary.

P.S. we visited the Vasa Museum on Monday, it's absolutely wonderful - a world class treasure.
