5D
Tamron 24-135
70-200/f4 L
Sigma EX 1.4x converter
Worked ok.
2 years later did 10 days thru Alaska with:
5D
24-105 L (never used this lens again)
70-200/f4 IS
300/f4 IS
Tamron SP 1.4x and 2x converters
Bogen 190XproB + Bogen 322RC2
Not much improvement. Actually was pretty disappointed with 24-105, 300/4 (and the head, too).
And finally, 3 days in Catalina with:
5D
Bigma
Ai-S 50/1.2 for night shots and/or bokeh
CZ 28/2.8 MM for panoramas & wides
Little Gitzo GT-0541 tripod + Arcatech GV2 head (holds Bigma+5D!) + Giottos M621 QR
And with this last set I think I have found the right travel combo for me. Except occasionally adding the little OM 21/3.5 MC and OM 24/2.8 MC (and CZ 35-70?) to the bag.
Traveling for me usually includes backpacking & 4WD in Western states - desert/mountains.
What I have listed may not be Alts - but they are MF and in the case of landscape/nature - tilt. Not your average auto zoom. I use the tilt function as often as the composition allows & even when it does not. Hope this doesn't bother anyone. Some day it may change to ArcaSwiss.
LANDSCAPE/NATURE
5D
24ts-e (soon to be ts-e II)(landscape & pano)
45ts-e (flower/rock groups etc., close-ins, pano)
90ts-e (detail, close-ins & w/extender for macro)
1.4tc (accessory, not a lens?)(34mm, 63mm & 126mm respectively)
Gitzo GT 0541 - filter pack - pano rig
In breaking the 3 lens rule - add a soon to be 17ts-e.....or flip a coin to substitute one of the above.
Mode of travel, security in the hotel, or lack of a hotel, security in the vicinity, scene requirements ... There's a bunch of things to consider when assessing what a good 3 lens solution is.
The 5Dii kit works really well although it's sometimes not possible to change lenses on the go. The 35L was by FAR the most used of the three... I'd consider just going w/ 1 prime on my next vacation.
Depends what I'll be photographing, but D700 and 35/2 ZF are my travel companions ;p Offered another 2, my 58/1.4 will come for night photography, and my 100/2 for macro... But more often than not, I'll just take the 35 alone...
And I might cheat since there is room, and slide in a fourth... Might be the OM 35-70/3.6, or possibly the Zenitar 16/2.8 fisheye... Or maybe my new (to me) Yashica DSB 135/2.8... Or perhaps...
My 3-lens kit is actually 4 lenses. Contax 25 (to be replaced any day by ZE 21), ZE 50, ZE 85, Contax 135. I fit all this and my 5D MkII in a Lowepro TLZ-2. But once I get a 100 macro (CZ, or maybe the new canon or a Leica) a 3-lens kit will be ZE 21, ZE 50, ZE 100 macro. As I am going all-Zeiss, I will try to live without AF. Live and learn...
If I could only carry three it would be: Voigtlanders 125, 180 and 20.
I just got back from a little trip where I took my Crumpler 6mdh and stuffed it with the 5D2, and all my Voigtlanders (125, 180, 90, 75, 20 and 40) - I didn't need all 5 but I wanted to see how I would use each one if they were all available on a trip. The bag was not heavy at all and very comfortable!
I don't have any problem carrying this size/weight of bag with me daily. From day to day I will trade out a Voigt or two for a CZ.
