p.1 #1 · Girl on the Subway

Here's a shot that I took yesterday riding the subway:

350D, 24-105L, 4.0, 1/30 , ISO1600

The expression says a lot.

Nice vertical lines and great tonal range.

Good photo in BW.

Thanks Steady.

I immediately "saw" it in black and white when I was taking it. I'm not completely sure why. Maybe the setting, her clothing, and the men in back combined to form an old school feel for me.

Hmmm

Joseph...I know just what you mean.

I bet it was those chrome poles and hangles (coined term) and he clothing got your eye.

I tend to "see in black and white" so much of my work tends to be BW.

Not that I have anything against color.

When I do "see in color" I tend to go to the opposite extreme.

My original abstract paintings for instance are very vibrant colors. They "burst" with color.

The two are so different, most people thought they were from two different artists.

Keep those eyes open!

Good point Jim,

I would expect to see some "camera shake" on a subway.

Maybe it was stopped at the station.

The slow shutter speed used is nice.

I was surprised at the quality of the image due to the normally "dim" and "ugly" light found in most sub cars.

Thanks again Steady. I'm still playing around with my BW conversions, so I'm happy with how this turned out.

Thanks Jim. The train was moving at this point, but I was definitely able to get sufficently sharp shots.

Great photo. I can just see her slowly swaying back and forth with that same unchanging expression.

Joseph,

I have to ask- Did you know this girl?

If not, how to you get a "candid" shot like that?

She obviously knew you were taking her picture, as you had to be several feet away. Did you ask her to pose? To pretend you weren't there?

I'm always trying to figure out how to approach strangers when doing this kind of shot. I find it difficult. (she wasn't worried that you were some pervert going to post her pic on some questionable internet site or something?)

Been meaning to start a thread dedicated to this very topic...

Like here?

but seriously - hard for her not to be posing in the circumstances.

Thanks Paul Hodson. It's definitely the day winding down.

Cableaddict - Yes, I knew the girl. This was the second shot in a series of five or six that I took. She was off in her own world when I took them and never saw me snap them. Or, she never acted as though she saw me haha.

I think that thread would be very interesting.
